I am now pregnant with my third child. My husband and I have completly discussed how this is our last baby, so he is getting a vasectomy and I want to get a tubal ligation (we want to be extra, extra sure this baby is the last). All the research I've done on the internet basically tells great things about getting a vasectomy, but all I get is horror stories about have a tubal. My mom and 2 aunts had it done years ago, and they have never complained about having it done, but those seem to be the only women that haven't. So, I don't know who to believe my mom and aunts or the research I've done.

What can I do next?

I had a tubal after my 3, and it has been great. It wasn't very painful at all and has made things more spontainious with my hubby. No complications with the tubal.

Everyone that I know that has gotten a tubal has complained about some type of pain and not feeling normal.

I think people who have problems are the exception, not the norm... you read more about them b/c people who have good experiences seldom say anything, but those who have bad ones - tell everyone.

My 3rd child was a c/s (after 2 vaginal births) we knew this was our last and my husband was already scheduled for the vasectomy. I opted for the tubal b/c they were in there already for the c/s. I did experience heavier than normal periods from that point forward - after 6 years of dealing with that - I had an endometrial ablation.

I don't think you really need to do both a tubal and a vasectomy - though if that will give you peace of mind - do what you will. The vasectomy is a much simpler procedure done in office with a topical anesthetic... the tubal, if not done at the same time as a c/s or the day after you deliver in the hospital, will require another outpatient hospital stay with general anesthesia... just for thought.

many women have been on BC for years and are taken aback or blame the tubal for regular menstration cycles and symptoms. Yes I have periods and bit more cramping. It is not from the tubal it is because I no longer take BC pills. Many women need to stay on them even after tubals beause they have more severe symptoms.

Looking on the internet is the LAST place you should be looking to see bad effects from it. The thing people look at the most if the negative things about procedures, so the negatives are always the ones to come up the most during research. I had the ligation done 6 years ago and am SO glad I did it! It's so nice not having to ever worry about getting pregnant! I was in pain for the first 6 weeks, but I also had it immediately following vaginally delivering my son. So, without that, it may have been much different. I would expect discomfort at first for sure, since it is a surgery, but it was such a good choice for me in the long run!

i had mine done after my 3 child too and it was fine no probs. i thought i was having issues with it b/c after the inital 6 wks my periods were very painful and then the pain lasted longer and longer so after nearly 3 yrs a mass developed and i had it removed found out i had stage 4 endometriosis and had to have a hysterectomy...but that had nothing to do with having my tubes tied and not having to worry about birthcontrol just makes things so much more fun and relaxing not having that worry in the back of your mind!

I had a tubal ligation after my third child. I wish that I never did. I now enjoy cramps, headaches, including migraines each and every month. Sometimes I have sharp pains that I can only say are in my ovary. Before my tubal I never had so much as a cramp during that time of the month. I have spoken to several woman that have had dramatic changes surrounding their periods. Please visit the web site www.fittobeuntied.com before making a final decision. I have a friend that also had similar changes after her tubal. Last year she had her tubal reversed. Within her first period all the headaches , cramps were gone. Good luck, R.

I had a tubal about 8 years ago and had no problems at all. My doctor wouldn't do it at the same time as delivery so I went back when our daughter was between 1-2. Some of my friends had the procedure at the time of their last delivery. I don't know if the type of delivery makes a difference or not. On mine, they went through my belly button and I only had a tiny scar for about a month. I didn't realize that I would need sanitary pads after the surgery. I told the doctor to make certain NO MORE BABIES! He laughed and said the procedure he does - CUT and tie, was very reliable, he wouldn't recommend it to anyone who may want something reversed later. I wasn't supposed to lift anything over 5-10 pounds for a few days but was pretty much back to regular stuff in 4-5 days, just a bit sensitive with clothes for a little longer around tummy. I am SOOO glad I had mine done! Good luck!

I had a tubal after my 3rd child, too. I was a little nervous because my sister-in-law had one a few years earlier and complained of extremely painful cramping and headaches afterward. I went ahead with it (using the same doctor as SIL) and have experienced no problems. I had small pains in my upper side immediately following the procedure (the doc said I had some bleeding while he was doing it) but it was gone before I left the hospital. Now, 4 1/2 years later, my periods are actually more regular than before and no problems. Guess it all depends on the person and how their body reacts. Good luck.

I had a tubal after my third child (2005). I, too, heard all the horror stories but never experienced any of them. I'm guessing it all depends on the doctor and the procedure he/she uses. Talk with your doctor to find out exactly what happens and share your concerns. Good luck.

I'm not sure what stories you have heard. It's a pretty easy surgery as far as surgeries go. Not risk free, but nothing is. I used to work as a medical assistant in an OBGYN office. Tubal is a good way to go since you are sure you don't want more kids. The dr can do it the day after after a vaginal delivery while you are in the hospital anyway - no need for a separate surgical trip. It doesn't make the recovery from your delivery too much different or much longer. They do it at the time of a c-section delivery since you are already cut open. Makes no difference in recovery after a c-section. Remember tubals just alter your fallopian tubes, not your ovaries or your uterus, thus you will still have periods and maintain your hormones until menopause. Just no babies. Nothing is 100% effective except abstinance but a proper tubal is very, very close. Along with your husbands vasectomy you will really be home free! Congrats on baby #3 and to the rest of your years of worry free intimacy!
