I had my tubal done 7 years ago in April. I was a little sore afterward, however I was up walking and left the hospital the very next day. I have no hormonal issues from it and have not gotten pregnant. Hope this helps.
Hi moms,
I would like to get a tubal done soon after this baby is born, but I've heard some conflicting stories. I just want to hear real stories about the effects a tubal caused, good or bad. I don't do so well with hormones, and condoms are so nasty. I''ve also heard of natural family planning, but I REALLY don't want another baby. I know that even a tubal is not 100% effective, but if I gt pregnant with that, it is definitely no fault of my own. Any input would be nice, including recovery from the procedure. Thanks girls!

I was 100% against a tubal. I was having my second C-section and the whole world kept telling me to get one, "they are going to be in there anyway". Whatever! :) My main objection was that "most" women that get a tubal end up on birthcontrol anyway to help with their periods! Seriously?? Who wants to do that?! I went with the Mirena IUD. I had a wonderful experiance with it after my first born. Now: people say, "well but its no 100% effective"...well, neither is a tubal (as you pointed out). It is absolutely AS effective as sterilization. Plus 2 added bonuses: 1. little to no periods (about 1/3 of patients don't have periods) and 2. it last for 5 years. Let's say for whatever reason in 5 years you decide you want another child. Have the IUD taken out and presto! With a tubal its VERY expensive and doesnt always reverse! Best of luck to you! If you want more information send me a privite message.
I had a TL post C-section and I have no complaints. I have not noticed any ill effects. It took me about 4 weeks to recovery from both so I can only imagine recovery time for just the TL would be a week or less. I have a friend who had a TL (no complaints from her either, in fact she says her period is now lighter) and she was feeling fine after 3 days. My doctor did tell me that the TL becomes less effective after about 10 years and that if you have it done in your 20s, as I did, then you have a higher chance of failure and a late in life pregnancy. Here's hoping that doesn't happen! I also had a coworker who had the Essure procedure done. It is done without anesthesia and the recovery time is 1 or 2 days. She said it was easy and she is very pleased. I would have chosen that procedure had I not had a C-section with baby number 2.
I had a tubal during a C-Section... the recovery was totally fine. I would feel a strange "twinge" every so often but nothing tough. I did have really heavy periods after the tubal. Some people say that this is a side effect of the tubal. For me.. I think it was a combo of having 2 kids pretty close together, getting older, and genetics (my mom had HORRIBLE issues when she was in her mid 30's to 40's). I have since had an ablation due to this.
I would get another tubal in a heart beat!!!!
Best of luck to you!!

I had a tubal ligation immediately following delivery of my 4th child (I was taken from the delivery room to surgery) which was the first for anyone at that hospital, but it was planned that way due to the anethesia I already had, and there were no problems. I didn't want to sneeze or cough for awhile of course due to stitches, but was all too happy not be have to be thinking about having another child.
I had my tubal almost 10 years ago and it was out patient surgery. It was done when my youngest was 1 or 2 (so maybe it was 11 or 12 years ago, my how time flies) ~ tiny little incisions like with laparoscopy (spelling?) while I was more tired than usual for a few days, pain was minimal with Ibuprofen being my main choice of pain relief. Zero complications, best birth control ever (except for the scare last year when I was 10 days late, but we chalked that up to age ~ now I'm in my mid 40's)....
My friends insurance finally started covering the Essure Procedure. She had been saving money to pay out of pocket for it. She is extremely happy she got to spend the money on somethi8ng else.
They doctor takes a small spring like item an scoots it up the fallop. tube. it has medication on it to stimulate tissue growth. It eventually makes a 100% natural blockage and is safe.
She had it done one day and was back out taking care of the goats the next day or so.
I had a tubal ligation several decades ago, never had a problem with it, and never regretted the decision. It was in conjunction with some other abdominal surgery, so recovery for the combined procedures took awhile, but there were no complications.
I hope yours serves you as well!
Hi K.!
I just had my tubes "clamped" 7 weeks ago after a C-Section with my 2nd child. I was told the titanium clamps would cause absolutely no pain and I would notice nothing. After the sugery I felt some pretty good pain localized exactly where the clamps were placed. It lasted about 5 days then all was good. I feel great now and notice nothing. Best of luck with the tough decision.
I have never had a tubal, but I am also considering it after the birth of my child. I have been talking to my OB about effectiveness of birth control methods and the vacectomy is the MOST effective of all, about 3 times more effective than a tubal ligation (although the the tubal is 99.5% effective). The IUD is only 99% effective in comparison and can perforate your uterus, and increase your risk of STDs and have other serious complications. Also the merina IUD another poster recommended is effective because it is impregnated with hormones that release over time, which is important to know if you have issues with hormones.
Good luck with your decision!!!
I had a tubal during the birth of our son via c-section. My OB cut, burnt the tips, then clampped. My hubby and I knew we didn't want anymore kids due to complications with all 3 pregnancies. My last was the worst, lots of complications after the delivery, so I'm glad I had it done. I did develop a uterine infection, but that could've been from anything, I don't think it would've been the tubal.
I don't know if my symptoms of my unusual cycle is from the tubal or again being so sick after delivery, lots of scarring in my uterus, but when I ovulate I have alot of mucus secretions now, I mean alot!! with some blood occasionally, it's weird. haven't seen the Dr about it yet. My periods are heavier now and I'm moodier, although that could be from having 3 kids, lol. I also breakout a bit more.
It is nice to have more "freedom" with my hubby. He couldn't get a vasectomy due to family history, and there's no way I wanted to use comdems or go on the pill or any hormone thing!!, so I had the tubal. I would do it again cause I really don't want anymore kids. I know they say it's not a 100% but I think for me it would be a miracle for it to happen.
I don't know if this helps you, but I wish you luck with your decision.
I had a tubal a few hours after having a vaginal birth. The procedure was easy, though didn't realize until the nurse told me that that pain after is about the same as a c-section. My advice, don't chase the pain, make sure you stay ahead of it with medication. My first few periods after the tubal were so heavy, I thought I was hemmoraging. They have since calmed down, but are not regular. When I ovulate it is painful now and I have some odd pains I didn't have before. I too don't do well on the hormones, so thought this was the best option. In retrospect, I wish I had made my hubby get a vasectomy. I have 2 sis-in-laws who have done great with their tubals, so might just be the unluck of the draw.
I would suggest doing some research before you sign up for it. I wish I had given it a bit more thought. My kids are only 15 months a part so I was so overwhelmed at the time, I think I rushed into it.
Good luck!
I had a tubal the day after my son was born and they just left the epidural in which was nice so that I didn't have to get another one. I was awake for it. It was a little painful, but my main pain came from an air bubble that was in my shoulder and gas x took that way thankfully. (weird I know). I figured why not have it right away since I was already recovering from having a baby and I don't regret that. When I did get my period back though I had bad cramps and heavier bleeding then I did before but that only lasted about 6 months. Good luck with your choice and let me know if you have any more questions.
I had one about 10 months ago, while they were doing the csection. I was in a lot of pain( more than the other 2 csections) so I dont know if itwas from the TL or just the csection in general. Good Luck.. My friend had the other procedure done... wheere they insert something in your tubes.. she is happy with it
I had a tubal 4 months ago right after I had my second child. I've had no problems. I had one dose of pain killer after the operation and that was it. I was up and walking within a few hours and fine. It was totally tolerable in my opinion.
My body is still adjusting from having a baby, so I can't say much about my cycle except that it's there and sorting itself out.
Hope that helps!
After my fourth, we decided I would have a tubal since I was already having a c-section. My recovery was much worser than the other 3 c-sections and although my doctor said it wouldn't impact my recovery, every nurse said it would..and it did. Since you aren't having a c-section I'm not sure if my input is helpful, but after the initial week of c-section healing, I haven't noticed anything specific to the tubal. Unfortunately for me, my periods were so heavy I had to go on the pill to help regulate. It is a nice feeling, though, that if I miss a pill or two there's no fear in getting pregnant.
I have heard good and bad about tubals. I was going to have one the day after my last baby was born but spur-of-the-moment my husband and I ended up changing our minds and going with the copper IUD like we had between kids. It lasts for 10 years and is one of the most effective things on the market, plus it doesn't have hormones! Of course, like any other thing in the world there are risks etc that your doctor can cover with you. There is also a new procedure called "essure" and they actually go in through the uterus and use nodes to cauterize your fallopian tubes closed. This procedure is fairly new but is supposed to be less invasive than a tubal and more effective as well, you should check it out! Just google "essure" birth control!
