Trying to Re-home Our Golden Retriever (Like NOW!)

We are HORRIBLE dog owners. I'll be the first to admit that. We have had our sweet dog for 7 years and she just deserves so much more attention and love than we can give her. We are moving in 7 days and are trying to find her a new home but we don't know what to do. We CAN'T take her with us. The owner's won't alllow it without a $350 deposit which we can't afford. She's a very beautiful, loving dog, and we want her to go to the right family. What can we do?

What can I do next?

Please don't just dump her on someone. If you don't REALLY want to be horrible dog owners, contact a Golden Retriever Rescue and they will take her. Seriously, just giving her away or sending her to the pound is like letting her loose in the road. I understand that things happen in life and we can't always know what we will need to do- but in this case, you have a clear choice to do something responsible or to really be bad irresponsible dog owners. There is a rescue group for pretty much every breed in every state- do the right thing and move with a clear conscience!

Rescue organization for sure.
Just call and explain your situation. They will help you. When I went through a rescue organization to adopt my two puppies, they said that a lot of people want older dogs, especially people with children. People want to know the dog's temperament and if it will do well with children. Puppies take so much work that many people don't want to deal with it, but an adult dog that is healthy, sweet, and well behaved will get a home quickly.

Find a Golden Retriever rescue group in your area. She will be placed with a "foster family" until they can find a loving home for her.

Contact an animal rescue or put an ad in the paper. Since it's an older dog, don't take her to a shelter. They'll have a hard time getting her adopted and they'll probably put her down.
Start knocking on doors. Ask if your neighbors know of anyone that would want her.
Put an ad on Craigslist.

Golden Retriever Rescue, DVMMOM supplied the links. Are you moving intown or somewhere else? Can you find someone to take her temporarily while you look for a home for her? The sooner you start looking and the longer you have, the better her chances of finding the right family.

I am totally on board with a retriever rescue.....PLEASE dont willy, nilly give this dog away!!!! I watch WAY too much Animal Cops on Animal Planet!!! You explain your situation to a rescue group, you are gaurenteed placement!!! These people dont judge..they are thankfull that you even stepped up and did the right thing for an animal that you love.

Good Luck :)
