I recently made the decision to quit smoking after being a smoker for 15 years. I have tried cold turkey in the past and with the stresses of being a single working parent it didn't fair to well so I have started taking Chantrix to aid the process. I am on day two and so far its helping. Does anyone have any experience good or bad with this medication? Any tips for fighting urges under stressful situations?

My husband started using it in June 2007. July 4th was the last cig he had. Never got the head rush or anything, he was looking forward to that. He ended up with a rash (he blamed work as he hates his job). He stayed on it til December of 2007. He has been around smoking and has never had the "craving". He smoked for over 30 years. At the end he was smoking Swisher Sweet little cigars and was inhaling them as a cig. I would say it worked for him. Blocked whatever it was suppose to in the brain.
Try every avenue, if you really want to quit for what ever the reason, Good Luck to you!

I just wanted to tell you Best of luck with quitting, you can do it! I too am a single working mom who thought the cigarette was "my time", the one thing that was mine and the stress releiver of the world! I quit 3 months ago and its been a rough journey but I just think of my daughter and how important it is to do this for her! I used the patch for the first week and had TONS of fruit and veggies available for snacking!!! If you need any support or someone to vent to please feel free to send me a note. Good luck to you and Hang in there, you CAN do this!

Good luck to you!! I KNOW personally how tough this is - especially as a single working mom! I tried the Chantix (and it has worked well for others) but it made me sick to my stomach very badly. I used gum and patches - but really, you should use every tool available!! The web site that someone was referring to on this board is called Whyquit.com ? I think. It is great. Also, look into a support group; these really help too. Keep trying if you fall off the wagon - remember, smoking less still has rewards! Also, they say it takes many attempts. Keep it Up!!!!

My partner and I are using Chantix right now and we are both doing great. This medicine blocks the receptors that makes you want more nicotine. Once your brain is able to do this then it is just breaking all of your habits. The best way to do this is to keep a journal for a while to find out when you tend to smoke more and if you have to break one habit at a time.

The only side effects we have had is about the second week we both had some vivid dreams. Not necessarily nightmares, but just very real. Also, and this is an important one, TAKE WITH FOOD!!! We have each made this mistake one time and only one time. It will make you very sick to your stomach.

I took the medicine for the first 4 weeks but now I have not taken it for four days and I am doing great. I basically took it long enough for me to break my habits. I can't say that I will never have a relapse, but I feel comfortable saying that I am smoke free now.

If you need any support or anything else please feel free to contact me. That is another big helper. Having support.

Best of luck!! And remember to not be too hard on yourself if you are not successful right away.

If you are ready, b/c you have to be, DO IT DO IT DO IT!!!!! My hubby and I did it last June and have not had a smoke since!!! We did both have the bizarre dreams associated with the pill, but other than that no need for the smoke. We ended up not doing it the full time b/c of cost so we weened on like we were suposed to stayed on full for 3 weeks, then spent 4 weeks weening off. It worked for us!! One word of caution: IF YOU ARE NOT READY NOTHING WILL WORK!! You have to ready. If you are then go for it, it is the miracle drug for us!! It was so powerful that even the smell turns me off. The only daily struggle I have is if I see someone smoking, the action of putting the cig to the mouth is what is appealing. Still today, almost 18 mos. later, the smell turns me off. GOOD LUCK and DON'T GIVE UP!!! =)

BTW My mom quit right before us with welbutrin....she is now back to smoking full time. She is considering Chantix. Just an FYI

I just recently "quit" in January. I was given wellbutrin. Its an antidepresent that also seems to have side effects that makes you not want to smoke. I started taking it in the middle of last winter for seasonal depresion. I saw the effects it was having on my smoking cravings so ive kept taking them. I no longer take it now. However winter is around the corner i might need it again. I have only bought one pack in 8 months. So I consider that quiting. I did however give myself a leway. I said if i go out drinking im allowed to smoke if i chose to. In doing this Ive even minimized the amount i smoked when i go out drinking. i used to smoke a whole pack just when out. now if i go out it will maybe be 5. However for me the next day I dont have the desire to want to smoke. So that way might not be best for everyone. I have allowed myself the occational cigarette here and there. Im not going to beat myself up so long as im on the right track and dont fall back. I think one pack in 8 months is awesome. Good Luck and congratulations for making the first step. Deciding this is what you want to do and finding ways that might help you.

Hi Nicole,

I hope you're able to kick the habit. It took me a year of trying different methods, cold turkey, patch, gum, etc and then falling back into the habit, and kicking it again until 5 years ago this month I smoked my last cig. I smoked for 20 years. I know where you are at, and you can do it if you put your mind to it. Just keep working on it no matter what happens. Anyway I used Commit lozenges. The other methods like the patch didn't deliver enough nicotine to calm my cravings but it was hard on my stomach. I ended up getting acid reflux and going on meds to heal that problem after I started using the Commit but it was definitely worth a little stomach trouble. Good luck!

N.,

I just wanted to let you know that my mom used that and ended up having dilussions. She would start talking to herself and yelling at people that she thought was yelling at her. My mom and dad talked to the dr and they took her off and she hasn't had any problems since.

You are on the right track by recognizing the key to kicking the smoking habit is learning new ways to deal with STRESS. Meditation, yoga and hypnosis have proven very effective in managing stress levels. I have been a nonsmoker and have practiced self-hypnosis for over 20 years.
Wishing you success!

I have the script for the Chantix but have never gotten it filled! Right now I cant afford it (doesnt make sense that I can afford cigs but not this I know! ) but I have heard WONDERFUL things about it! Also, there is a website- cant think of it though- that my sister used that emailed her nice info to let her know how far she has made it and how it has impacted her body.... by not smoking x many days you have lowered your risk of lung cancer this % etc. Also nice cards to say you have made it a day, week, month etc. She is now on year 2 and she did it cold turkey with the website for motivation. Do a search for quiting smoking and I am sure you will find great support groups to vent when needed also!

I really just wanted to wish you luck! You are doing a wonderful thing for yourself and your child! Please keep us updated on your success! Remember to think positive... If you want to quit you will!

Blessings to you and yours!
