This has been so hard for me this time to get started. My husband can eat anything and stay thin. I just look at it and I am 5 pounds heavier. My last baby is now 8 months old and really there is no excuse for being overweight now. I am just at the point where I don't know where to begin. I have done this before Lost 60 lbs on WW but I just can't seem to get started. Any suggestions???? I have about 75 pounds to lose. Does anyone struggle with this. I wake up every day and say to myself. I am going to start today, only to fail. HELP!!!!!!!!!!

Hi M.,
I haven't read the other responses so I apologize for any redundancy. I wanted to lose weight for a long time but every time but my husband continued bringing home fast food and ordering Chinese take-out. He finally started to take me seriously when I joined WW. I know you said that you tried that, but did you do points or core? My sister-in-law is having the same problem with the points as you are, it's her second baby and she's just lost her drive. I'm on core and the menu really is quite bearable. I threw out most of the junk food (I have to leave something for my 2 1/2 yo and husband) and stocked up on stuff I can eat. My husband actually likes most of the core recipes I make (he doesn't eat fish so I make it when he's working).
I started out strong and lost my drive after the first 2 weeks, but I am ready to start again. Try core for a couple weeks or set a small goal (7 lbs?), take a break but don't go crazy, then start back up after a few days or a week. Get rid of hubby's junk food and he'll have to go shopping for himself or be more supportive.
Good Luck,
Bridgette

I have a 6.5 mos old son and I just started this week doing the couch to 5k program on http://www.coolrunning.com . After he wakes up, I put him in his bouncy center and I run on the treadmill. It gives me a goal to look forward too ( a local 5k race) and it helps me lose weight. I have lost some weight already. Good luck!

It's a mind set for sure....

With so many children your life has got to be very busy but it's very important to also make some time for yourself....

Do you have any family members, friends or a neighbor who would diet and exercise with you...if so call them. It might be easier to start with someone...

If not it's up to you to give yourself that push to get started. You need to get yourself into the right mind set.. "Do you want to be healthy and fit for your children?" "The older you get the harder it gets to do." "It's important to be good to Myself" "It's important to do this before I get sick." I'll be much happier and will look and feel better....etc.

Make some changes in your Kitchen....stop buying and keeping cookies and junk foods in the house. It's not even good for the children.. Replace it all with healthy foods and snacks....you know this info better then anyone...

Gather the children and go bike riding with them and take them for brisk walks around the block....making it a fun family thing...

I know you can do it.....Pick a day to start...and keep us posted on how it goes....

Hi M.,
I am not a mom but a personal C. and I would like to say so pleae do not be so hard on yourself. I do understand your frustrations to get your body back but the fact that you are stressing about it , is part of the problem as well. Trying to loose weight to early is not good for you or the baby. Changing your diet around to incorporate a whole foods regime is extremely helpful. If you can change just one thing daily you will be surprized what your results will be in 30 days. I know people say this all the time but it is true. Enjoy your blessing and relax. If you want to talk some more lease feel free to email me at ____@____.com. I've worked with mothers that have suffered from post pardum and other individuals that wanted to loose weight and it is possible.

I can relate to your problem. It is a war to lose weight. Maybe we need to look at it as a war and address it as such, a war that I'm going to win. I mean without of course getting too nasty but just deciding that you are going to do it. I tell myself, "I'm the only one that bends the elbow, no one is pouring anything into my mouth, just me." Stay focused on your goal, and "just do it"!

I haven't met anyone that really loves to exercise but most people will say that they really feel better after they have done it. I remember seeing a movie that stared Demi Moore, she was in the service and she was as hard as a rock. She worked hard at that, no doubt about it, and it showed.

Get going, today is a new day. Today is the "present", the "gift", yesterday is gone and tomorrow will never really arrive.

About Me: I'm 60 years old, have been married 38 years to the same man and have two grown sons, one daughter-in-law and a grandchild on the way.

I would make it a family affair. Don't call it a diet, just decide that you want your whole family to be healthy. You have to just make the decision to start and stick with it. Your husband has to be on board with this 100% or else he could undermine your efforts. Start slow and plan to lose only a pound a week.
I lost about 20 pounds this way before getting married. After my son was born, I started this plan again. I am still working on it since he is only 4 months old, but I have lost almost 35 pounds so far. I plan on losing another 10. It's not a fad diet and it will keep everyone healthy, not just thinner.
Here are my basic guidelines:
Throw out all the junk food in the house: chips, cookies, anything with more than 10 ingredients is generally not healthy. Stop drinking soda and juice (eat the fruit and you get vitamins and fiber instead of excess sugar). Or drink juice diluted 50/50 with water. Switch to water, skim milk, or herbal teas (there are lots of flavors that you can make that taste great when chilled too). Stay away from artificial flavors, colors, high fructose corn syrup, trans fat, "diet" products made with sugar substitutes (these are just as bad for you as regular sugar). Stevia is the exception- this is a plant based sweetener that is not bad for you. Ban fast food, pizza, ice cream, breaded stuff like chicken nuggets.

When you are hungry, make sure you aren't just thirsty. Pour yourself a tall glass of water and drink it. If you are still hungry after, then eat something, but this way you will have less room in your stomach so you will feel full quicker. Be sure to keep well hydrated, especially if you are breastfeeding your youngest. When you eat, put a smaller serving on your plate and take your time eating. Don't eat off your kids' plates when there is food left over. You don't realize how much extra you are eating. Just throw it out or give it to the dog, etc.

Buy lots of fresh produce and make sure you cut it up into snack sized pieces as soon as you come home from the grocery store. This way it will be available right away in the fridge. Buy some healthy dips, like hummus, guacamole, red pepper spread, etc. Make your own salad dressing with olive oil & vinegar or lemon juice and spices. You can use greek-style plain fat-free yogurt instead of sour cream to make dips or other stuff; it's thicker and it tastes great. Dried fruits and nuts are good snacks too.

Buy whole grain pasta, brown rice, whole wheat bread and get lean cuts of meat and add more fish. Cut back on cheese or buy low-fat cheese (not fat free it tastes terrible and who knows how it is made). Don't buy processed cheese and deli meats- get the fresher brands of sliced meats and real cheese without all the extra nitrates.

At dinner time, cook some extra chicken breasts or other lean meat that you can cut into strips and leave in the fridge so you add it to salads for lunch the next day. Or add extra finely chopped veggies to tuna salad (celery, carrots, onions, olives or pickles, cucumbers, tomatoes, etc).

Replace sugary cereal with healthy brands, like Kashi or buy the new kind of Quaker oatmeal that is more natural. Use spices or good fats like olive oil, grape seed oil and Smart Balance (made with healthy oils to lower cholesterol) to add flavor to healthy foods instead of butter or margarine.

Go on a walk every day with the family, even if it's only a 15 minute walk around the corner. Push the baby in the stroller. The older kids can ride bikes if they want to. This should be easier in the summer. Take them hiking, camping, play sports and all kinds of outdoor activities. In bad weather you can go to the mall and push the baby around in the stroller for exercise. Or find a few girlfriends who would be willing to walk with you every day. The other thing is that many cable companies have a free "on demand" exercise channel with lots of different workouts for all different levels and interests. Some are even 10 minutes long that you could fit in while the baby is sleeping.

Don't worry if you have an off day, just remember that it is a process and that you have not ruined everything just because you ate some French fries. Don't skip meals! Allow yourself to eat a small amount of something bad every week, or maybe have your husband hide some dark chocolate somewhere and you can have a piece every day. Kashi makes these oatmeal chocolate chip cookies which are pretty good. Some people even have one "cheat day" per week.
And don't weigh yourself more than once a week. Do it in the morning before breakfast and after your first trip to the bathroom, that way you will see how much you weigh without any food in your stomach.
Good luck and you can do this!!

First of all M., congrats on having eight babies!!!! I have three children, my youngest is eight months old as well and I've found it VERY hard to lose weight this time. I too am about fifty pounds overweight, pretty much all in my stomach area, ugh. I've tried a lot of things including lots of exercise (walking two miles, three days a week) and things haven't been working so well for me lately. I think age starts to play a huge part in it. It's depressing and I feel for you. I even had to cut out dairy and eggs b/c my beautiful little boy is allergic and I'm breastfeeding and I only dropped ten pounds originally. Try to stay away from the starches, that's my main problem, bread and carbs. Good luck, if you ever feel like chatting my e mail is ____@____.com WW would definitely be a great start, most of my friends have lost an incredible amount of weight from WW. Have fun with those kids!!!

Hi M.,

It IS tough to get started with a goal, but you can do it bacause you've done it before! I used Weight Watchers to lose weight too, and it worked each time. My suggestion would be to ask yourself "what is the easiest step towards losing weight that I can do today?" And I do mean the EASIEST!! Maybe it would be to buy a healthier version of one food at the grocery store this week. Or to put a pretty pitcher of water in the fridge with some lemon and lime slices, to encourage you to drink more fluid during the day. Whatever you decide, it's a step towards your goal. And actually, just deciding to make a change is already a great first step - you've already accomplished a little goal towards your big goal!

I hope that deciding to make an easy change will lead to the next easy change, which will lead to success that's motivating. It's a way to create an upward spiral for yourself. Good luck to you - you can do it!

Dear M.,

Congratulations of finding the time to write an e-mail while raising 8 kids. What an accomplishment in itself.

I too am very familiar with the weight loss game. It took me 9 months after my daughter was born to start trying to lose the weight. They key thing I would say to you is to not let your extra weight define who you are. I found I let my moods be driven by whether I fit into anything pre-pregnancy, or even just a smaller size. I should have been focusing on what I do have (i.e. a wonderful husband and beautiful daughter) instead of something superficial as weight.

That said, it is important to try to live a healthy lifestyle not just for yourself, but also as an example for your kids. My suggestion is you start out slowly. Try to make one change each day: walk a little bit more; make one portion smaller; add one more vegetable to your plate; stop eating one unhealthy food just for a day, etc. I think over time when you see you can make changes you might be ready for a more structured program like WW. It usually takes around 2 weeks to create/break a habit. The key to any weight loss is determination and consistency. You will have neither if you start when you are not ready.

The key thing is to be kind to yourself and know whatever size you are you are special, important and worth loving.

Best of luck to you.

M.

Honey, my son was almost 2 before I got so fed up and finally did something about it. I lost almost 20 pounds on my own, but it took almost the 2 years. Finally, I said I'm going to WW. For me, this was the best decision ever. It only took me 4 months to lose over 30 pounds. You have to be ready to do it. If you're not ready, it's much harder I think. You need to want it and not be forced into it. Try going to the gym as well. Or go to a park and walk. I put my son in the stroller or wagon and we just walk around. And if it's too hot, walk in the mall early in the morning before the stores actually open.

Hi M.. My husband and I have a beautiful 3 and half year old son. I have struggled with my weight for a number of years, but it was very hard getting the weight off after pregnancy. I didn't know how to get it off, and I wasn't keen on dieting, although I thought about Weight Watchers. Last year, I went to Weight Watchers, and to date, I have lost nearly 50 pounds and I cannot tell you how it has changed my life and my self image and overall well being. I am now hoping to become a leader there in the future.
I would recommend that you start there, as you had tremendous success there in the past, as that is what you indicated in your message.
All the best to you.

M.= I struggle with this too. I am a mom of 2 girls and the youngest is 2. I lost 50 lbs last year but I put 25 back due to mahor stress in my life. I am doing WW online and it is a help to talk to the ladies on the boards. We have a great support group for each other.
My biggest problem is that I buy things for the kids and hubby and then I eat it. I did best when most things in the house were WW friendly. The kids ate it and so did he. I just began cooking healthier and they went along with it. I have begun again to start to pay some attention and the weight is going down slowly. I will take it!!

I have about 100 lbs I would like to lose. I take it one day at a time. I look at all the sadness around me and realize I need to do this for ME and then look at my girls and realize how much they NEED ME and do it for them too.

I am there with you. My son is 4 and I finally am motivated to lose weight. My motivation was health, I started to have a high heart rate because of my weight. First, I joined a local 24 gym for only $10 a month and go after my kids go to bed for an hour (I am a night person, my friend goes early inthe am before her ids wake up). Then, since I grocery shop, I only buy food that are not tempting to me. I bought only healthy foods, the 100 calories snacks, or snacks for my kids that I don't like. I figured that it does not hurt for my kids to not have junk food. I then sat my husband down and talked to him about how important this was to me, and asked him not to eat the things that really tempt me in front of me and went over in detail what I meant. Then I joined weight watchers. The first 2 weeks were hard, but since then it's been good. I don't lose weight every week, but in total I'm down 20lbs in 3 mo. I have about 45lbs to go. If you want more info on how I"ve been able to satisfy some of my cravings, get in my 5 fruits and veggies a day and not be starving allo day long, please contact me. It's good to have a weight loss buddy to encourage you, give you tips, and say it's ok when you've had a bad day. Losing weight is really hard, and you've got 8 kids so you are real busy!! I only have 3 and it is still tough. I just want to show my kids what healthy eating is. Good luck!

Hi! I too have a weight problem. I need to lose 150lbs so if you find a magic solution let me know;) I was doing well at loosing weight and had lost 60 lbs and my thyroid went haywire.

As all weight loss programs say get your doctor involved and make sure that there is nothing wrong. Simple blood work made me realize I was not crazy and did have more of a problem than what I put in my mouth. I was so tired I would fall asleep nursing the baby and I would sleep 10 hours and wake up tired and I gained 15 lbs in 5 weeks with exercise and watching what I ate. As for motivation I still haven't found anything that works every day but I want to go kayaking with my daughters and my dad said he would buy me one when I was small enough for one! A.

Hi M.!! Don't be so hard on yourself...you've had 8 children!!!!

A friend of mine suggested this site to me because it is absolutely free. It's called "sparkpeople.com" and when you register you can make your profile on there and see all the things they have to offer. I started last year and was doing great, but just like you I eventually fell off the wagon. I'm still struggling, but I'm feeling moremotivated to get moving again. The bottom line is we're not getting any younger and even though losing weight will make us feel MUCH BETTER, we also need to keep ourselves healthy so we can be here to take care of our families!!!

I know WW is great too, I just don't have the money. Check out that website. There is so much support on there as well.
