Trying to Get Pregnant with Irregular Periods

For my first child, we just stopped trying not to get pregnant and we got pregnant the first month. No timing questions or anything. This time, my periods are all over the place (29, 28, 30 and 36 days over the last couple months) so I don't have any idea when we should 'try.'

Of course all of this shouldn't be a problem, but since it was so easy last time and now there are two other girls at work who just annouced that they are 10 weeks pregnant already, I am trying to be the control freak that I usually am. I know that stress isn't good for conception.

Someone please give me something to help me without telling me to relax and it will happen with time =)

What can I do next?

FYI. Dollar Tree has ovulation predictor kits...only one buck. If they are like the pregnancy tests, they work just as well, you may just have to pee in a cup then use the dropper they give you to put a few drops on the test stick. I have 3 in the bathroom closet I never got around to using before I got pregnant. You are welcome to have them. I'm in South City. Good luck!

Over the counter ovulaiton tests. I tried for about 10 months around day 14 with no luck. Started using the ovulaiton tests and they showed I should try on day 17. And I was pregnant in three months. Good luck. (I too got pregnant with the first in one month :))

I don't know how old you are, but if you are in your mid or upper 30s I owuld definately see the doctor after 6 monhs of trying. That doesnt' mean you need fertility treatments, but she can make sure theere are no obvious impediments. My GYN tried clomid but that didn't work I imagine because I was trying at the wrong time of the month!

One person said irregular periods means no ovulation. That's not necessarily true...my OB backing that statement. I have never really been regular, but have been able to get pregnant. Try an ovulation kit, that's what worked for me, but b/c of my irregularity, I had to probably use more "sticks" than most. I started testing at the earliest possible date. Good luck! Relax! and just have fun trying!

I would go to fertility friend.com and chart your temperature and all that to see if you can find a pattern. Then you will know (no matter how long your period is) when you are fertile by change in temperature and the other symptoms!

first, i wouldnt worry unless you have used ovulation tests for a few months.

just go to early pregnancy tests .com and order a bunch of the ovulation sticks, they are so much cheaper than the ones in stores. you start using them on day 12 after you period and MUST use daily at the same time. it will tell you exactly when you are going to ovulate. the first time you get a dark blue line, that means try that first day and the next, and you should at least know you are on the right day. they are also so much cheaper than over the counter brands(but if you dont mind the expense, just go to the store today and buy a test set to start tomorrow)

even if you are trying the exact day, there can always be something wrong with the egg which then will not result in a pregnancy. but with the sticks, you at least know the right time and in turn, the right time to take your pregnancy test. if using theses tests, you still dont get pregnant in 6 months, go to your doctor. they will take you seriously when you tell them you were using the tests versus not.

i have very irregular periods, and these tests helped me get pregnant with two of my children the very first month. i didnt ovulate until at least day 22. thats way over the 14 day average. i would have always been trying the wrong time if it werent for the tests.

It took six months with my second (I'm now 27 weeks preggers), while my first happened without us even thinking about it.

I did the temp readings, charting them online, and ovulation tests for 3-4 months. Then I read "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" (www.tcoyf.com), and starting charting temp, cervical position, and cervical fluid. It only took two cycles, and I knew exactly when I ovulated/conceived. Pretty amazing. I've since recommended the book & website to others, and the results are really great. The book also teaches you to recognize signs of abnormality so that you know when it's time to get some help.

Good luck!

Dear Jen A.

An irregular periods also means an irregular or no ovulation. This is a very common problem after having the first child. It can normalize itself after 1 or 2 years or you can take a supplement program that many women use to normalize their cycle in 30 to 60 days.

Your liver and Pituitary are responsible for getting your cycle back to normal.

1) Ovarian Complex: 2 capsules twice a day for 4 to 8 weeks. - http://ndinutraceuticals.com/product39.html

2) Livachol: 2 capsules twice a day for 4 to 8 weeks - http://ndinutraceuticals.com/product237.html

There are other supplements can speed up the recovery but this usually does the job. If your period regulate on the very next cycle back to its original date, it is still important to finish the supplements.

Good Luck

Kim

You may want to just have sex every other day after your period ends. Mine was REALLY irregular, like 56-70 days between cycles. I wasn't ovulating though, so if after a couple months of trying nothing happens, you may want to talk to your OB/GYN.

Go to a fertility specialist that specializes in PCOS and other forms of infertility, then you can rule out or confirm if you have PCOS, or some other form of hormone imbalance. It's a great relief to learn & understand what your body is doing.
Wishing you a baby soon.

Yup, I had this issue with irregular periods. I got frustrated as well. First month I used an ovulation kit when trying to get pregnant the first time--it worked! I got pregnant with my son. Used one again the second time around and got pregnant the very first month again!! Good luck!

My husband's advice when someone wants to get preggers is get drunk and jump in the backseat of a car, ha ha. Just kidding. I hear the ovulation kits are the way to go in that situation. I may need to go that route myself. You are right, try not to stress about it because that just makes it worse. Pray about it, and God will let it happen in His time.

Get the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler. (They also have a good website with forums www.tcoyf.com) It will teach you how to tell when you are ovulating and will help you get pregnant. I also like cheap ovulation tests online from early-pregnancy-tests.com.

There's only about a 20% chance of getting pregnant each month, even with perfect timing and everything. So you got very lucky the first time.

Also, different length periods DOES NOT mean you are not ovulating. I am doing fertility treatments and have ovulated on a different cycle day every month. Absolutely do not start taking any supplements (except prenatals-which you should actually start taking 3 months before you get pregnant ideally), because that will most likely mess you up more than help you. Also, it is way, way too soon to go to a fertility specialist-if they'd even let you make an appointment, it would be a waste of your time and money. I have PCOS, if I'm not being medicated, my cycles are anywhere from 100 days to 6+ months (I've always been like this.) You have normal length cycles (it's actually normally not to always ovulate on day 14, there's some perfectly normal variance there) and *probably* are ovulating. If you do get concerned after several more months, your regular obgyn can run some basic bloodwork, etc.
