We are a family of 6 (2 adults, 1 teenaged BOY, 1 tweenager, and 2 toddlers. I'm trying to explain to my hubby that food prices have gone WAY up in the last few months. He wants me to find out how much we SHOULD be spending in groceries. I spend about $200 a week.. one of the babies is still in diapers (I buy luvs). This also includes our two cats and my HUSBAND'S tortoise! I'm a stay at home mom who runs an after school daycare and does secret shopping on the side to make ends meet and try to build some sort of a savings. I want my hubby to SEE we are doing okay.

What can I do next?

L.,
6 years ago I had 2 working adults, 3 teenagers, a big dog and a cat and I spent $150-$180 per week -- 6years ago! I now have 3 adults and the 2 animals for the last year and we spend $125 - $150 per week.
You will have to average all your answers. Everyone shops differently - prepare from scratch to heat-n-serve - and at different types of food stores.
Good luck.

Well, tell your hubby that you are doing a great job! It is me, my husband, our 2 yr old son, 1 dog, and 1 cat, and we spend about $150-$200 a week on grocery's. Actually, what I had to do was make my husband do the grocery shopping one week, so he could actually see for himself how much it costs. He would always ask me when I came home how much I spent, then be surprised when I told him. Now that he has gone a few times, he gets it that groceries are expensive!

Hi L.!
Wow, if you get away with $200 you're doing good for a family your size. I spend about $200 every other week doing the "real" shopping, but then there's always the little & big extras (laundry detergent, shampoo, etc.) so I spend about $180 a week. My husband doesn't have a clue when it comes to the shopping. I'll come home happy because I bought Porterhouse steaks on sale for $4.99 lb. & he'll ask if that's a good deal. I'm all bug eyed looking at him saying ah YEAH!! Give your husband the check book and the list & send him to the store, & see how much he spends. Oh, buy the way, we're a family of 3 (Mom, Dad & 20 yr old son).
Good luck!
