Trying for Second Baby and Still Breast Feeding.

My son is almost 14 months and we are ready to start trying for the next one. I'm still breast feeding, although he eats tons of solids. He is a really good eater. However, he loves breast feeding. I think it is more of a comfort for him now. I got my first period back on July 25th, the day after my son's first birthday. It did not return until September 19th and only lasted one day. Since my period is so irregular, is it going to be hard to get pregnant again? Has anyone had a problem? I am trying to get him to drink regular milk, but he is NOT too fond of it. I'm still trying though. I don't want to stop breast feeding cold turkey, but would like to do it a lot less. Am I fertile now? Can I get pregnant? Should I do the charting or just go with the flow and see what happens? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

Just go with the flow... trust me, so many women have thought that because they're not having a regular period and they're breastfeeding that they can't get pregnant, and that's how many "accidents" happen. *laugh* Besides, stressing about it can make it harder to get pregnant so I wouldn't chart it or anything, just stop using birth control and have lots of sex! :)

Hi A.,

I got pregnant with my second when my first was 13 months old, and I was also breastfeeding, a lot! (several times a day, and several times at night)

If you want to try to increase your chances of ovulating, then try to have at least 1 six hour spell each 24 hours with no breastfeeding.

But trust me, breastfeeding and pregnancy can go entirely hand in hand. Just have fun "working" on getting pregnant...work, work, work!

Also, if it helps, buy an ovulation test kit - they really do work and it can help you to pinpoint your timing...and timing is EVERYTHING!

Good luck - you'll LOVE having a second.

I got pregnant with our 2nd when my baby was 11 mos old and I hadn't gotten my period at all. I was still breastfeeding, and continued through the first 2 months or so of my 2nd pregnancy. He weaned himself off (thank goodness, not sure he would have fit on my lap to breastfeed for long. I started showing much earlier on my 2nd). Evidently you don't need a period to get pregnant. I figured it would take awhile to get pregnant again since it took a several months with the first. It will be hard to know when you are ovulating, but just keep trying. And maybe ask your doctor for help or try one of the ovulation prediction kits? Good luck!

Go with the flow and see what happens. I got pregnant (planned) with my second while still nursing my first. She was about 17mos old. My periods were not regular either but I had a hunch by the way my body felt and lo and behold we got pregnant on the first try. We are trying for number 3 and it hasn't been as easy and my periods are regular. Go figure! LOL

I wouldn't stop cold turkey. But he is getting close to the age where he understands more, so you may be able to cut out some feedings. Why not get those ovulation strips, they sell them in boxes of 30 so you can check everyday.

Gotta go, my two are bouncing off the walls! LOL

Exact same with me. My daughter had allergies so dr. suggested I continue with the breast until two and I was just not ready to stop breasteeding either. We started to try to have a baby same time, I stop breastfeeding on her 2nd b-day(enough was enough at that point)next month I was pregnant. Set a target date and if not pregnant by then, then I would suggest you stop breastfeeding. Its not impossible to get pregnant while breastfeeding, but it can slow things down. Hope this helps
