Trileptal (Husband)

My husband was just prescribed Trileptal as a mood stabilizer. Whereas I think he is ADHD and bossy, the psychiatrist he is now seeing thinks he is more Hyperthymic Personality mixed with some sensory issues with sound. He can go from being cheerful to snappy and irritable and then back to cheerful very quickly. Anyone have any experience with this drug?

What can I do next?

Trileptal needs to be built up in the system so he may want to try it for longer than a month. My son was on it for a long time and had great success with it. Thankfully, he no longer needs to be on mood stabilizers so he is not on them anymore. We tried to use it in conjunction with other drugs with no success, too many side effects from the other medications so we stuck with trileptal. It works very well and has been around for quite a long time so there is alot of case studies to look at for long term affects.
I think that these people (doctors) get paid to diagnose our problems and sometimes we have to give them the benefit of the doubt, I say try it for a few months, monitor him closely and hopefully it works out. There is not much of a difference between ADHD and what you describe he was diagnosed with. Its pretty amazing how mood disorders work and how complex they can be to diagnose. There is no harm in getting a second opinion after you have given this a try. Best of luck, it is challenging to live with a person who has unstable moods, you must be a strong woman.

Is he taking it in combination with another drug? I am curious because it isn't often used alone, but rather with other drugs to get the most effectiveness. Watch him closely for signs of depression and/or legarthy as these are warning signs that it isn't the right drug for him. Also, I am sure the dr already warned him, but drinking alcohol with the drug can be disasterous.

Good luck!

As you probably already know, Trileptal is a medication used to treat seizure disorder and they found that it also has good effect on mood disorders. Your husband will probably experience fatique in the first few weeks of taking the med. Hang in there, the side effect should go away once his body is used to the medication. I have treated patients on trileptal with reports of good results. I take Topamax which is a med for seizures. I take it for Migraine headaches. AT first fatique was pretty annoying, the doctor started me on a very low dose and I gradually increased as tolerated. This worked out well.
