Trichomonas

My OB called me yesterday and told me that I have the trichomonas infection in my vagina. I had this when I was pregnant well I was given metro gel for that at that time. After I had my son I had sexual intercourse twice with a condom both times so when I went for a pap smear I was sure nothing was wrong but that wasn't the case! The assistant called and told me that I had trichomonas again. This doesn't make sense. Could this be a misdiagnosis???

What can I do next?

If you are seeing the same OBGYN as the first episode, I would consider going to another one for a 2nd opinion.

I feel that doctors sometimes look over your chart and decide that if it happened once, that is what it is again.

I was diagnosed with an abnormal pap after pregnancy.

Please read over the following and use your own judgement. These are what work for me. (Some are a little personal, but very helpful.)

Eat yogurt if you can; this can help with bacteria that may be causing an infection or other problems.

If you use deodorizing feminine products, DON'T. I have found that this causes infection too. I use Carefree brand panty liners (unscented with baking soda) on a daily basis to draw the daily "stuff" away from my body. After a few days, you don't even realize you are wearing them and they keep you "cleaner".

I also have found (and heard from several people and doctors) that not wearing underwear at night helps keep the bacteria from collecting. If you don't want to sleep "nude", loose night pants still work.

Lastly, don't use wipes or douch. It can cause your body to create MORE bacteria because you have gotten rid of the GOOD bacteria as well as the bad. I use a scent-free, color-free shampoo on that area (front and back -- outside only) and have not had problems in years.

I hope this is helpful.

I know other people that have had it that never cheated. It is an STD but only because one person can give it to another. No one has to cheat. I think Trich is really hard to get rid of and Metro Gel is what they always give and isn't always effective. The doctor needs to try something else. Anyway, it's possible you never got rid of it. Ask them to try something stronger. I've had to go through several rounds of that stuff.

I doubt it is a misdiagnosis. Trichomonas is actually a parasite and not a form of bacteria. You can actually see them under a microscope and they are very distinctive. The other responses are correct in that you and your husband/partner should be treated at the same time. You could be reinfecting each other condom or not. I'm surprised your doctor hasn't suggested this. You also want to clean your bathroom and bed linens really well just in case. They don't survive long outside the body but you never know and it's not like it would hurt anything to do a through cleaning right. Well good luck in clearing up the issue. ( I was a Lab Tech. in the Air Force for 7 years and helped diagnose this more than once.)

I don't have an answer for you but I'm wondering if there are other infections that mimic trichomonas. The reason I am skeptical is because when I was married to my first husband I had a baby...then three months later I got pregnant AGAIN! When I went to my first OB appt. for the second pregnancy I had trichomonas. Of course you know it's sexually transmitted so I flipped out on my husband, who swore he had done nothing witn noone!
Eventually I dropped it but now you've got me thinking...

I have heard that if you have trich, you AND your partner have to be treated. He probably has no clue he has anything because men just don't get the lovely symptoms we get when something if off balance down there.

I would think if you had trich you would notice the symptoms unless the pap caught it at a very early stage.

Good luck getting it all worked out.
