Hi K. I was in Walmart yesterday and they had some nice suits for boys maybe they have trench coat too.
I need an overcoat for my son for his grandpas funeral this weekend, I was hoping to find a nice peacoat or trench with a lining that he can wear over his suit. I can't believe how expensive they are! Has anyone been out shopping at a TJ Maxx or outlet and seen anything that would fit ths bill? I'm not a shopper so could use some extra eyes - thanks!
Thanks for all the great ideas. I ended up finding a decent peacoat on sale at LandsEnd.com and it arrived in time. It was a dark green, very appropriate and he can wear it next year as well. It was FREEZING during the graveside ceremony and I was so glad he had something decent to wear over his suit.

Since Easter is not that far off, you might want to try Burlington Coat Factory. They will have the Spring coats in and a lot of choices.
I would try landsend.com and see if they have the same coat at your local landsend/sears store.
Go consignment. It's your best bet if you don't want to pay full price for a new one. I've never seen trench coats for boys anywhere but at high end stores or online.
try Aeropostale for a peacoat
When my nephew needed a suit for a funeral we went to Goodwill. He was at an age where he was growing so fast that we didn't want to invest in a suit that he would likely not fit in for very long. (and we did find something very appropriate). If you have the time and inclination you might find something at a place like that or another resale shop. It will be a "hit or miss" shopping situation.
Join Freecycle in your area and make a post asking if anyone has one or try Goodwill. Seriously, though I don't think anyone would fault you for wearing his regular winter jacket over his suit. My daughter's high school went to Washington, DC a few years ago and they attended a ball for them and all the other hs students - many of them wore formal dresses with their letterman's jackets.
This is the time of year that TJ Maxx and Marshalls actually has those sort of dress coats because of the Easter season. I have seen them in there, but it can be hit and miss with them, and I haven't looked this year. I don't know how old your son is, but you might check some childrens stores, unless he's older.
Try the resale shops, goodwills, freecycle and craigslist. If you don't find one on there I would never look twice at a child wearing appropriate everyday outter wear to a funeral. They grow too fast and being with your family is more important than chasing for a clothing item.
