Treating MRSA in 16 Month Old

My 16 month old daughter is being treated for MRSA. (Her pediatrician thinks the infection is secondary to her eczema) She's on an oral antibiotic and ointment, but it doesn't seem to be going away. I'm growing concernced since this has been going on for a month now and new lesions are still popping up. Has anyone out there had experience treating their child for MRSA, or does anyone know if any homeopathic remedies that work? I worry about the potential side effects of the medications she's taking.

Thanks! I welcome your feedback and advice!

Hi S.,

A close girlfriend of mine has a daughter with the same diagnosis. Her pediatrician suggested they give the baby a bleach bath (a capfull bleach per tub). It seems as this is working, but seems so harsh! IF you get any good suggestions, I'd love to hear them!

Good luck

That is nasty stuff you dont want to mess with. My little one had just turned 1 when he had it in a lymph node near his growing and he was hospitalized for a week. They had him on IV antibiotics and had to do sergery to get the infection out. As soon as my pedi seen it he told me to go home, pack our bags and go to the er. It cleared about a week after we got home, he was still on oral antibiotics when we left the hospital for two weeks.
I would take her to the er, MRSA is also very contagious. Its leaves nasty scars as well. You say she still has them popping up, then the antibiotics have stoped working or were never working to begin with.
I hope she gets better, I dont mean to scare you with this, but I am just really afraid of this stuff! Please let us know how it goes. Take care.

Hello S.,

This is no time to play amateur guesswork with homeopathic remedies. If you're serious about going the homeopathic route, please consult a professional practitioner who is certified. Any remedies over-the-counter will not be strong enough.

As everyone said, this is serious stuff - go to the ER! I can't believe your doctor isn't already advising that!

Hi S.. It's SO weird, my 5 year old had MRSA a couple months ago. It was the strangest thing. Didn't know how she got it. No one else had it. She started getting little sores on her tushy and I didn't know what it was. But the doc confirmed MRSA. I gotta say I freaked a little, but in the end all was fine. He put her on a super antibiotic (oh gosh I can't remember the name now) but I do remember it taking a really long time to look better, like 6 or 7 days after the meds. I started getting worried that it wasn't working and she would have to be hospitaized. But it ended up going away by the time the medicine was gone. I don't know about homeopathic remedies. MRSA is deadly if not treated properly and just in my opinion, I didn't want to wait around to see if something may or may not of worked. I try not to give my kids meds as well, but I knew this was not treatable with out anitbiotics. A staph infection is nothing to mess around with. Luckily my daughter has only been on antibiotics maybe twice in her life (not counting this) so the antibiotic really kicked it out because she is no where near immune. Her Dr. may need to give her something stronger. If new lesions are still popping up, then it's not working. Def call the Dr. again and let him know that this is urgent and she is still getting new sores. She may need to go to the hospital for IV antibiotics to get rid of it. Good luck and I hope she feels better soon! I see your in canoga park, I'm in woodland hills, what dr do you see?

Personally, I wouldn't play around with MRSA in a toddler. If you're not seeing results after a month of oral antibiotics and ointment, I would go to either a dermatologist or allergist (they would work with the underllying eczema) or an infectious disease specialist, or all three.
I might go with a naturopathic physician simultaneously, but not instead of.
Good luck!

I'm surprised you were allowed to take her home, much less be out and out, because this infection is soooo infectious and so deadly. Every case of MRSA I've ever heard of up in Seattle where I went to school was cause for immediate hospitalization & isolation until the infection was treated.

Hi S.,
I have a friend whose daughter had this not too long ago & I shared your questions with her and this is what she said:

My daughter had what her pediatrician called a “form of staph” right before her first birthday (it just looked like a really bad diaper rash) & just had us put an antifungal cream. It went away but then came back with more of a blister look rather than a diaper rash so she diagnosed it MRSA & prescribed her another cream. We went over the same routine of antibiotics a few times, with her cysts getting so bad we almost had to have them cut open & drained. Her pediatrician kept saying “it was nothing, it would go away” but after the 3rd time of her almost having to go to the hospital, we decided to change pediatricians for a second opinion. The new doctor prescribed her an oral antibiotic a lot stronger than she had before (there were side effects but it literally got rid of the cyst within a day or two), made us bathe her with medical grade soap, we all had to wash our hands with it (anyone who came in contact with her) & we had to put a cream called Bactroban on the Staph, inside her nose & inside everyone’s nose that came in contact with her. It was a terrible experience with how much pain she went through & all the doctor visits, but since that treatment her outbreaks have been VERY minimal & she isn’t in pain anymore. That’s the best advice I could give! Good luck & I hope she gets better!!

I hope this was useful! :) all the best, M..

hi, i'm a big believer in homeopathic stuff, but in this case, if our daughter really has MRSA and its not going away you need serious antibiotics and medical care. get back to the doctor and get answers now. this stuff is really serious!

We also just found out last year that my son has MRSA. I was told that my ped that there is no cure and that all I could do was give him antibiotics for the break out and just wait for the next break out. It was very upsetting to hear that I couldnt prevent this some how...so I started looking into other remedies. I found a lot of information online about using the Indian spice Tumeric. Here is one of the web sites I read this on http://www.earthclinic.com/CURES/boils.html. What I do when I start to see a boil forming I will make a paste of Tumeric, grape seed oil and water and rub it onto the boil and apply a bandage over it. I also give Tumeric along with Probiotics in a smoothie for him every morning. You cant taste the spice in the smoothie at all. I really seems to help a lot. Since I started this he has only gotten one boil and right away I put the paste on it and it just started to go away! Research Tumeric online, it has a lot of healing powers and is really good for you. I now cook with it all the time. I cant hurt to try it, Its only a spice. I found it at Whole Foods Market, but I am sure they sell it at the Supermarket.

The first time I tried this remedy, my son had a big boil and I had a doctors appointment the next morning. I put the paste on it and a few hours later it drew the puss out and looked alot better. When I went to the doctors the next day I told him what I did and he said that the boil looked good and that I didnt need antibiotics. Try it, it really cant hurt. hope this helps you and I would be interested in your feedback if you try it.
