Traveling to a Foreign Country with Baby Food

My family is going to the Caymans in two weeks, and I'm planning to take Sprout baby food for my 9 month old. I know some foreign countries do not allow you to bring or take out produce, plants, etc. Since baby food is fruits and veggies, I'm wondering if we're going to have a problem with Customs in the Caymans. I'm not sure what kind of baby food they have there, so I'd hate to lose all of ours. Has anyone had experience with this?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to all of you who have responded. It sounds like we'll be fine taking the baby food with us. I may consider buying some there too since there will be a decent variety. There are just so many things to consider and uncertainties especially since this is my first time to fly with him and my first time to the Caymans. I really appreciate all your advice and reassurance. I know we're going to have a great time!

You can take the food with you. Just call the airline or look on their website.

My sister lives there and has lived there for 20 years. She's had 4 children and they all ate the same foods that we had here. I've been several times and they have big grocery stores with most of the same variety that we have here. It's just more expensive. You're fine. Whoever said anything about the sanitation is misinformed. Like I said, my sister had 4 children there and they are all fine!

Have fun!! Try to go to Sting Ray City you'll have a blast!

Personally, I would not take a 9 mo. old baby to a foreign country, even the Caymans. The sanitation will not be equal to what you are used to expecting.

Viruses are mutating rapidly and bacteria is becoming resistant to antibiotics, (MRSA for instance), even here.

You don't know how clean the person is that cleans your room or the people that made your meals.

I would leave the baby with his auntie or grandparents and just have fun. (Wash your hands frequently!)

I know I sound like an old 'scaredy cat',but I am not really that bad--just very cautious and safety conscious,
especialy when children are involved.

Some things like MRSA are incurable and often fatal in younsters.

The rules as I understand them are that you can not bring fresh vegetables or fruits in to our country... not baby food. Baby food packed in your luggage should be perfectly fine.

As long as it is in an unopened jar you should have no problems. What they don't want is raw or unpackaged foods entering their country. You should be fine.

You won't have any problems as long as they are in original containers and sealed. Most times no one looks or cares. That changes when you come back to the US. There you will be asked and not allowed to bring in fruits, nuts and plants. They often have a dog who sniff around looking not for drugs but for food LOL

There is no problem taking bottled food that is still sealed abroad. THey have a problem with fresh produce only. So, don't worry, even less if it is packed in your checked in luggage.

They don't have a problem with what you have on your baby bag for the trip either.

Hope you have a great time!

It's safest to contact the Cayman Tourist Office. I wish we had before we went to Jamaica as the airport officials confiscated a lot of food, there's certain foods they just don't allow in.
Enjoy your trip....D. F

My doctor told me about a food processor. It cost ten dollars at walmart for a 1 cup processor, made by Black and decker. I use it when I travel and at home. Put what I am eating process to the right consitency for my daughter. I believe it is healthy way to give her a large variety of foods.

I've travelled to the Caymans a couple of times with young kids, and never had a problem bringing in food--even lunchables in our carry-ons. I honestly don't think anyone checked anything when we arrived. Like other posters said, coming back into the states is another story. But I also agree that grocery stores there have just about everything you're used to here--we got the same brands of all the same things the kids liked (cereal, mac n cheese and stuff--they were too old for babyfood). Depending upon how long you'll be there for, you may not want to carry enough with you for your whole trip. When travelling with kids, I'm a big one for packing as light as possible--I only bring enough diapers, food, etc, to get through the day we travel, then plan on stopping by the store within 24 hours of arrival. The less you have to carry, the better.

Anything in glass jars will have to be checked, since they won't allow it on the planes these days. Glass also gets heavy quickly, and can break, so watch how you pack if you do decide to bring food with. Also remember that checked luggage does sometimes get delayed--on one trip to the caymans, my bag arrived 2 days after me. It wasn't tragic--I bought a suit, shorts, and t-shirt at the hotel gift shop, and was fine--but you wouldn't want to be counting on feeding your kid out of luggage that has been lost.

Have fun on your trip--the Caymans are a very kid-friendly place to travel. I'm sure you'll have a great time!

Dear A.,
You can take baby food and formula to last you the two weeks and little extra in case you get stuck there. This is allowed because it is not fresh but in jars and has been processed already. You should not take anything fresh like fruits or plants, they will take it away and dump it. Also, you will probably find Gerber, Heinz or a few organic baby food jars in supermarkets there, but to be on the safe side, you are better off taking it with you.
I have not gone to Cayman yet, but I have traveled overseas enough to know that they never allow fresh stuff to be brought in because seeds can be planted and diseases can be spread to their farms. They also do not allow fresh meats.
Hope this helps.

We frequent Cayman and if it is in your luggage you should be fine. As another stated it is fresh fruits and vegetables that are the problem due to bugs. Also, their grocery stores are very "American"...the only real difference is that it is very expensive there. When my husband and I got married in Cayman, my nephew was seven months old and my sister-in-law had to do the same thing...it was not a problem.

It varies per country, but usually they're talking about fresh produce, meats, etc that can bring insects, diseases, etc. I don't think they'd be concerned about labeled jarred baby food. But, the security at the airport may limit what they'll let you take on board, so I would only carry on what you absolutely need and put the rest in checked baggage. And, It really depends on the wording of their custom's declaration form and how strict they are. From my experience (and I travel alot internationally), it's coming back to the US that's the most problematic. So, I wouldn't worry too much - it's also one of those situations where if you ask, you're far more likely to have problems than if you wait for them to explicitly ask you (either in person or via a form).

I think what they mean when they say plants fruits and veggies, is in the raw form. Is this babyfood in a sealed jar? If so you should not have a problem, if not, I would purchase a different brand for your trip. What they do not want is for people to bring live vegetation into their country, and possibly cause harm to the native vegetation. Also, they do not want you to see a beautiful plant and take a snippit of it home to grow your own, for the same reason. I hope this helps, Have fun, sounds like a fabulous trip!
