My cousin and I are planning a 17 hour car trip to visit family a few states away. I have a 3 month old, who is pretty much exclusively breast fed. However, I do pump and occasionally supliment with Neosure. My 5 year old will also be going with us. I know that my 5 year old will be a bit fussy. But I have movies, colors, ect. to entertain her with. My question is, have any of breastfeeding moms been on a car trip for this length of time? Am I just asking for a hard time? Is my little guy going to be miserable beyond belief? I'm hoping for some reasurance, and advice on how to make this trip as pleasant as possible for all involved. Thank you.

We took a trip like this when my daughter was 2 1/2 months old. She was also breastfed and decided that she would start refusing a bottle right before the trip. I bought a bottle warmer that plugged into the lighter. It only fit plastic bottles, so the plan was to pour the milk in there and heat it up and then put it in her bottle....it worked to pacify her before we made stops, but like I said that was about the time she decided she hated bottles :) I thought it was going to be miserable and that I would be stopping all the time to feed her. It actually went rather well. The car motion helped keep her settled. Most of the time our potty breaks coincided with her feedings. When we stopped for meals, I fed her before going to eat and tried "topping her off" after we ate. I can only remember having to make one stop extra for her. It was actually no big deal. She was pretty calm most of the trip. Safe travels! GL!

You can sit in the back seat and pump while your cousin drives, then bottle feed the baby the expressed milk. Or, since you have a 5 y/o and will need frequent breaks anyway, just take breaks and nurse the baby. It won't be that bad of a trip. Just find what works for you.

The baby should be fine, he is not used to being mobile so being in the car will not be very different than his norm. The only issue will be deciding if you are going to stop every 3 or 4 hours to breast feed or if you want to plan ahead and have bottles ready.

You can either stop and feed as needed, you might need the break anyway, or you can get an electric pump and pump as you drive. Are you actually driving or as passenger? Just get a hooter hider for the pump. If you are driving, it is probably easier to just stop and feed though.

I took a 1500 mile trip with my 2-month old breastfeeding daughter and our 2 dogs. It was so much fun! First of all, set the intention that it going to be fun! Our mind is more powerful than we think! I drove a maximum of 5-6 hours a day and stopped once at the halfway point to feed her and let the doggies run around. It took us 4 days to get to our destination and was so worth taking that extra time. If you aren't able to do that, my suggestion is just to stop when you feel like nursing probably b4 baby cries. That will cut down on your stress. At 3 months, your baby pretty much sleeps most of the time, so, I think it's a great time for a trip! Have fun!

I think you will have a wonderful trip. First off the vehicle is normally soothing for a little one. If you are now bottle feeding, of course you are going to make pit stops and stop to eat wherever. If you can get one of those btl.warmers they are an excellent choice. I used one myself at they are great. I think for the most prt. when the vehicle stops is when she will wake to be fed and changed. If you could make it so that it coincides with her normal feeding that would be great. You may have to wake her. If you run into a few trouble spots you will be fine. It is only because she is either hungry or her little bottom is wet. Good luck and have a save journey, I think it will do you good. Your little one will also be fascinated with the view and asking alot of questions no doubt. Or it may be she will fall asleep as well. It may get real quiet!!
