Well, we're headed to Florida by car for the first time with the kiddos. It will take about 18 hours if we drive straight thru. Any tips (other than the typical DVDs) to keep my 4 yo son entertained? How about my 13-month-old?

Thanks much, L

It wasn't quite as far and only one little one (I have 2, but only 1 went with me), but I went on a trip with only my son, who at the time was around the 18mo mark. I had LOTS of snacks, lunch stuff, a cooler full of fruit, lots of new toys ($1 store type stuff), beverages, doodle pads, and we had to stop often. Our 1st stop was in Reading, PA to visit friends. Then we went to (near Boston) MA to visit more friends. But we went from MA all the way back here to just south of Detroit in one shot... That was a 14hr trip (incl. stops). He did way better than I expected! However, he didn't want to get back into our car for about a week once we got back!

It was just my son and I.

Good luck!

My kids are similar ages. My little one sleeps most of the time. Both like those magenet drawling boards (one each), and toys that make noise. Have a bag of stuff for them that they can easily reach, and possibly tie toys to little one's seat as they'll likely drop them frequently! :)

Good luck!

We just did the drive for the first time last summer with our 5 year old dd. We stopped in TN- and stayed at a hotel with a pool in it so we all had something to look forward to. We took lots of books & coloring books & crayons. She also had her ipod, so she could watch movies (dora, sesame street & word girl) with headphones later in the afternoon when she was bored with what we had. We also played car games: ispy & how many red cars do we see in the next 5 minutes, etc. It was a lot of entertainment, but it was good family time!
Safe travels!

I have four kids and we've made the drive from Michigan to Florida a couple times. I say go to the dollar store a buy about $10 worth of toys that the kids aren't allowed to open or play with until you get on the road. They'll be cheap toys that will probably break quickly, but it's always been a good time filler for my kids because they have new toys!

Good luck!
