Hi,

I need to find a gift for a 4yo girl, who's moving the day after her birthday party...and I'm simply at a loss as to what to get. Obviously it needs to be something small, but I don't know what. Maybe some kind of travel game?

Any specific suggestions would be much appreciated!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Wow!! Thanks so much for all your great ideas!!! We ended up getting her a disposable camera & small photo album that says "Friends" on it. I bought a bunch of travel stickers (airplanes, suitcases, cars, etc) & jewel stickers. I let my daughter decorate both the camera & the album. Then we added a special note in the first page saying the album was for her adventure, but that she would be missed.
Thanks again to everyone for all your quick & thoughtful replies!!

Very cute ideas already. A travel bag filled with goodies for the car trip? They have travel MagnaDoodles.

And magnets -- when I was a teacher, I got the metal round 'stove-top covers' and got magnetic paper dolls and other magnets (letters/numbers). The stove covers were great.

If she's moving states, and you get her a stuffed animal, name it for her "Cali" or the name of the city she's leaving. That way she's always got Cali with her, even if she's moved to Texas.

They're moving, correct?
* How about a mini suitcase on wheels (like the kind adults use for traveling) so she can take her blankets and stuffed animals. My daughter loved hers.
* A new small stuffed animal
* A small book

Hi,

I would get a travel container with a lid-- decorate it with her name on it, stickers, glitter etc. and then fill it with stickers, coloring books, crayons, markers, sticker books etc. She will enjoy it on her way to her new house and it will keep her busy in the car or at home. Each time I have given this type of gift, the kids love it and the parents appreciate it too!

Good luck~

Molly

My 3 1/2y girl is head over heals for Strawberry Shortcake. You could get her a travel pillow, a new blanket for the car, a new suitcase, a DVD, or just a gift card so that when she gets to her new house she can buy something.

I just returned from a 10 day road trip with my 4 yo son. He brought along a lot of toys, but most of them stayed in the bag. The things he used the most were his leapfrog, portable dvd player and viewfinder. The electronics are a treat in our house as I monitor and limit the time watched; however, on this very long car ride, I allowed it. So my suggestion is--if she has a leapfrog, buy a new game; if she has a dvd player, get a new movie and the viewfinders are inexpensive as are the new discs for them.

You're on the right track.... her favorite small stuffed animal or something like a little doll that comes in a bag of somesort to keep it in while in the car. My 4 year old loves "little" stuff and stuffed animals!

Check with her mom first - if you know she likes a particular cartoon character or her room will be a specific design - they make great wall stickers that can peel off without hurting the paint. The little girl can decorate her new room herself and feel at home a little quicker.
I've seen Disney characters at Target and Pottery Barn Kids has several designs too. I used them to decorate my baby's boring white closet doors and Diaper Genie and waste basket - looks great and peels off when it's time to redecorate! I bought a set that matches her crib bedding - butterfiles and flowers - so you might want to check out crib sets for other design options if her mom isn't into cartoons.

Where is she moving to? Get here something that would get her excited about her new home/city. A gift card to spend when she gets there might work.

A photo album? You can include shots of the neighborhood and house she is leaving and leave room for new pictures too. make sure to include friends, family and even the outsides of favorite stores ("look, there's a target near our new home, just like our old one"). Of course, you will need to know something about the new location - but having something familiar to look at when you're feeling really out of place may be helpful.

Hello J., I am doing the same thing for the boys next door who are moving next week. I am getting gift cards so they can go to the store for something for thier new bedroom.
With a 4 yo they are very adapt with a dvd player so a Veggie Tale movie,Care Bear movies or one of those that have several cartoons on them would keep her busy, and are not much more than $8.00 I found one for 5.00 or all girls seem to love Barbie
Good Luck

I have a 4 yr old daughter and some great ideas - 1) a sticker book - the kind where you can take the stickers and put them into the pages again and again. Can find them at Barnes & Noble. 2) a pre-K workbook - these are activity books (pretty thick) to practice writing letters, matching things, mazes, etc. You can also find these at bookstores. This would be something she can do in the car, on a plane, etc.

My daughter loved magnetic play sets at that age -- they're kind of like paper dolls but with a magnetic background and great for car travel. Otherwise, are there museums or zoos in their new area? Maybe you could get a membership or tickets for an attraction like that so she has something to look forward to.

According to my daughter there is no better present than a stuffed animal. That is something that can be snuggled on the trip as well. A nice book and an animal could make good traveling gifts. Have you considered a lap desk, one that is like a pillow on one side that goes against your lap but has a flat surface on the other side. That way she may be able to color on her trip. You could make up a small travel bag with her name on it and pictures of things that she likes and fill it with sunglasses, juices boxes, trail mix, flash cards, small books, stickers / sticker book, a bracelet, a disposable camera so she can take pictures along her trip, a head band or things for her hair, crayons / paper, etc. That way it is her "Special Travel Bag".

Crayola Color Wonder. My kids love those for trips. And the pens won't write on the car surface. You can get the ones with pictures and also blank color wonder paper so she can use her imagination.

My kids love the Travel Doodle Pro -- a magnetic board that they can draw on while they travel. The travel size is quite small, and easily managed by kids. Good for you for being such a caring giver!

This is a perfect travel gift - she can play with it in the car, airplane, hotels, restaurants, anywhere. It's fun and educational. Best part, it's on sale this month!

It's A Match: http://www.discoverytoyslink.com/esuite/control/product?P...

This one is also on sale, and is very fun for four year old girls, but would be hard to play in the car (but great to play in a hotel and to keep her busy while parents unpack their new house).

She could also have a lot of fun with this one, which comes with its own carrying case to keep all the pieces in order.

I hope you find her something perfect!
