I am 5 weeks pregnant - just found out tonight - I am supposed to fly to Sweden in February - will I still be able to go? I'm also supposed to fly to Florida next month - can I go?

What can I do next?

In feb you might not feel like flying, sitting a long time will possibly swell you up like a balloon, but if the doc says you can then you can... you'll only be about 6 mos along. I would say it would be more of a comfort issue rather than a dangerous issue. Pregnant women fly all the time. The 8th month would be the stopper for me. But this is just my opinion.

You can definitely go to Florida, but you'll have to check with your doctor about Sweden. As long as you're not in your 3rd trimester, it's usually fine.

Check with your doc.

I've had friends fly internationally until the month of their due date, they just flew business or first so that they had leg rests or beds to avoid blood clots.

Of course, blood clots are always bad/life threatening, and we all risk them every time in coach.

No, to Sweden. I would be really surprised if the doctor thought that was a good idea.

Most likely yes to Florida. You will still be in your first trimester.

The reason they don't want pregnant women flying late in their pregnancies is that your blood pressure rises when you are in an airplane so when you are pregnant this could potentially be really bad (preelampsia).

As with anything now, check with your ob/gyn but I flew up until my 6th or 7th month with my pregnancies. After that I believe they don't want you flying - not just because they don't want you away from your doc but also has to do with change in cabin pressure I believe. I surely wouldn't worry about the Florida trip. After that, you'll have to see how you're feeling for the trip in Feb but hoping that you feel great, that shouldn't be a problem. I would definitely check with the doc though.
Congratulations!

Yes, Florida. You can easily travel up to I think 32 weeks - then the airline require a letter from your ob.

you'll need to talk to your doctor. Most of the restrictions I had were for the 3rd trimester.

If you have no problems or complications then flying up to 6 months was okay with my doctor. Obviously you will want to talk to your own ob. If you have morning sickness it may not be fun in the first trimester. I flew on a propeller jet at about the 4 month point and the turbulence was pretty hard on the stomach (but I did manage to avoid the airsickness bag).

I flew from Japan to Spain when I was 5 months pregnant and had no problems. The airline did want to be notified that I was pregnant, but they had no problems with me flying at 5 months. My doctor didn't blink an eye at it either (and the flight was 20+ hours.) You'll have to check the airline on their restrictions for pregnant women (most are for after 32 or 36 weeks), but you'd probably only need a note from your doctor OKing your travel plans (good idea to carry even if you aren't at the airline's cutoff if you are really showing).

I'd consult your doctor about flying in your first trimester (especially if you are having problems or have miscarried, etc). But I don't think it'll be a problem otherwise.

Do consult your doctor about any flying concerns. If he approves the travel, ask for recommendations on how to keep in good health during the flight. Read up on flying while pregnant. Make sure you are well hydrated during the flight and move (walk the isles, roll your legs, etc) to make sure you are having good circulation during the flight.
