Ok, this may be a really dumb question but I have tried a few things and its not working. The trash can that sits in my garage SMELLS!!!! Our trash comes once a week on wednesdays. IT was really bad when we moved in so I soaked it with hot water, dish soap and bleach and it helped alot...but again now its soooo bad it makes me want throw up when I open it. Is there a trick it keeping it smelling ok? I spray the garage even if I have to be in there because its so strong.

ADD...It is the one from the garbage company.

What can I do next?

I periodically have to clean my diaper can and my kitchen trash can first with an antibacterial household cleaner and then with baking soda water. I make the baking soda water very thick and swish it all over the bottom and sides and then let it dry so that it has coated every thing, preferably in the sun if i can, and then rinse it out. This has worked for me in the past. Hope it works for you too!

I love all of the suggestions already stated to help with the existing smell. Are you putting loose trash in your can? We keep a separate large trash can in our garage lined with a large bag to collect loose trash (especially from the cars). We empty it when it is either full or starts to smell. We only put bagged trash in our commercial trash can and keep the lid shut. We clean it really well with bleach and soap in the summer. The cold in the winter months will help keep the bacteria from growing as fast as it does in the summer. Good luck!

You have to keep washing it out and disinfecting it. I disinfect the little trash cans in my house once a week. (We live in an apartment, so I don't have to deal with a big trash can.)

Also, if it's plastic, it's going trap odors, there's no way around it. A metal trash can would help with the smell.

We actually store ours outside our garage during the summer months because of the smell and heat from the day. Now that it's wintertime it's still outside...but will be coming back into the garage once it snows. I think we've cleaned ours once...I also just hold my breath when I open the lid and drop stuff in! Easier that way.

Hi S. -- Will one of those stick-on deodorant things stick to your trash can? (the inside!)

What about spraying air freshener into the can every time you make a deposit?

You do put all deposits in leftover plastic bags, don't you?

Good luck! -- L.

S.,

We have to bleach our out on occasion also and I believe in the baking soda in the bottom. But one thing we noticed that made a difference was making sure that everything you pout in the can was in a bag not just throughing in loose garbage. Especially things that will smell. Good luck.

I would also have to say call the garbage hauler and ask them to replace it, explain to them the reason why. I did this a few years ago. They didn't charge me either.

Hi, S.: I used to have this problem, and then I read to pour kitty litter in the bottom after every trash pick up. It really works...

Just a thought, can you call the company and ask them to switch it with a new can?

Try dumping a bunch of baking soda in the bottom of it (if you don't want to wash it out again). Otherwise, boiling water to rinse it and then after it's dry, use the baking soda to keep it fresh...works just like in your fridge... :)

Is it the one that the garbage company comes to empty?? If so, ask them for a replacement one...it would probably be free or a small charge...otherwise if it is your personal one, throw it away! something must have really been rotten in it before you moved in.
