Does anyone have any tips on how to transition from a bottle to sippy cup? My 13 month old does not want anything to do with sippy cups. Thanks!
My daughter never wanted anything to do with a sippy cup. I tried for a few months. At 12 months old, we ended up doing cups with straws.
We went colod turkey. She put up a good fight....crying, throwing the cup on the floor, refusing to drink. We threw the bottles away at night and had her wave bye bye to them. The next morning we offered the cup with milk in it first thing. Like I said, she protested til about 3pm when she finally gave in because she was thirsty and wanted her milk. We never had an issue after that and she went straight to the cup because she knew there was no bottles anymore. We were comforting to her by hugging, etc.... but firm that the cup was the only choice. I am not the kind of person that likes drawing things out, cold turkey is best for us. =)
I'm with Anne. Cold turkey is the way we went with my son, who is now 5. At 13 months, we told him no more bottles and put them all away...never got them out again.
We did the same thing with switching him to a full-size bed from his crib. Cold turkey... took down the crib and put in the bed the same day (with him watching). He was 2 years old. He didn't complain one bit.
That's just the way my son is. We have to say, "This is how it's going to be." And that's how it is...
We gave a son nuby sippy cups that still have a soft nipple like a bottle and then slowy transferred him to a playtex that is spill proff. The nuby sippy cups are spill proff but if they push on the nipple milk come out or water
My son didn't want the sippy cup at first either. He was a breast baby at first, but I started giving him breast milk in a bottle and juice in his sippy cup so that I could ween him off of me. He took to the sippy cup pretty well after that. However .. your son is a LOT older than mine was.
The bottle does need to go. His teeth will thank you for throwing the bottles out today. Keep ONE bottle that only gets water in it. Put his milk and juice in sippy cups. The Nuby ones are great ... there is also a Gerber cup that has a soft "nipple" attachment for easier transitioning. The only issue there is that you end up switching out one type of bottle for another.
My son really liked the cuppies that have the feel of an adult cup ... but has a closed top. Looks similar to the travel mugs we use for our coffee in the mornings. He did MUCH better with those than any other cup.

We did the same thing as the previous poster (cold turkey) at 12 months 1 week with my now 2 year old daughter (I also have an 11 mo old son)...we didn't go the whole waving, bye-bye routine -- they just disappeared. We never gave her formula or bmilk in a cup and never gave her real milk in a bottle so it was more like, here is your new big girl milk in your big girl cup. She protest whined in the morning for a few days but she caught on and ended up loving her milk in the cup. Good luck! I will be going through it myself in a few weeks again -- but luckily my son drinks water out of his sippy so I am hoping it goes smoother!
We went cold turkey with both of our girls as well. My first was not happy. She threw the cup and refused to drink. I was more than a little worried when she went all morning without drinking anything. I had my husband put the cups in the attic, so that I wouldn't cave. She woke up from her nap and was so thirsty she downed 2 sippy cups of milk and we never looked back. My second had no problem giving up the bottle. I started giving her a cup, once a day, at 10 months, I think that might have helped. Good luck!
What you're supposed to do is only put formula/breastmilk in it. Don't put regular milk or juice in it. Then when you offer real milk or juice in the sippy they will drink it because it tastes better then what's in the bottle. Also, experiment with different sippy cups.
we used the avent bottle and then used the avent sippy cups. the sippy was rubber and it was soft like a bottle nipple.
I keep a special sippy cup for milk. The Nuby Sports Bottle. It works for us...
For other sippy's... We found the Nuby straw sippy works best... And we got it to work by taking him to Olive Garden and Chilli's with us - where they will provide kids with straw plastic cups. He got the general idea, so moving to the sippy version went fairly easy... Especially when I had Chilli's put pineapple juice in it - let him taste it - then poured it into his sippy cup...
My son couldn't wait to get his hot little hands on that cup.
Talk up how you are taking him/her to the store for a special "big boy/girl" surprise. Then let him/her pick out a few cups at the store! They have a lot of really cute ones like shrek or princesses. The disney store even carries them along with cups with lids and straws. Get the child involved and excited!
