Transitioning from Bottle to Cup - Noblesville,IN

My son is nearly a year and transitioning him to a cup has been a battle so far. I have tried numerous cups and he bats everything away and refuses to even take a sip unless its forced! As a last resort, I offer his bottle which he now refuses too. so I have taken this as an opportunity to keep trying and no longer offer the bottle. I keep reading that your baby will drink from a cup when they are thirsty. I figure after waking up, he would be, yet he still isn't drinking much unless I force it. My first son was great at this transition, I had no issues, so I only hoped my 2nd would be just as easy. I have tried, water, milk and juice and he is constipated now because of lack of drinking! Any help would be appreciated!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for your support and advice. Today I broke down and cried to my husband because I took blame for this. I have been worried about his hydration and I was desperate for him to drink from anything! My husband got him to drink from his bottle and I have to be okay with that. I always try and follow doctor recommendations of having babies off of cups by a year. We are a few weeks shy, so right now I am going to take it easy and just be glad he is drinking again. I got 3 more cups to try and hopefully we will get there sooner or later. I have to tell myself that I am not a failure, that we can get through this, it just may not be at a year, or it might be. We shall see.

he is only one. Don't force him. We use sippy cups here and also the sippy cups with straws. My daughter is 19 months old now and can use a cup but prefers using straws. Don't make a big deal about this or it will become an issue. Just give him a sippy cup to play with and put some water or water/ juice in it and eventually he'll start taking sips from it. He is only a year!!
What is the big deal?? Also, you can stick him in the bathtub with clean water and see if he will drink the water from a cup in the bathtub, using the clean water from the spout. My daughter has been doing this for ages. It is fun for her and she drinks tons of water this way.

At 12 months what is the rush? Most babies this age still get a lot of comfort from sucking. He will drink from a cup when he's ready (which will be soon I'm sure.) Just keep offering it at every meal :)

When I transitioned my daughter we used a Nuby Sports Straw cup. I mimicks a bottle but is a straw. We then gave her a straw cup and now at 2 she uses a regular cup.

I hope that helps!

Does he drink from a straw? You could try just a cup with a regular straw in it. My son loves that, although it's potentially messier than one of those sippy cup/straw cups, but it might work. If he isn't drinking from the bottle either I would just set out the cup of water pretty much all the time and offer it to him. You didn't say how long this had being going on but I imagine after a few days he'll drink it. Also, you could give him sips of water from a "big" cup that you're drinking from, but you'll also have to monitor that! Good luck...don't you hate it when the second ones are less compliant! ;)

Honestly, I think this is one of those issues you can force.

Like you've read - he'll drink when he's really thirsty.
If he only gets cups, he's going to have to adapt. Period.
Hang in there, he'll come around when he figures out that he's not going to win this battle.

Have you tried the Nuby Sports Sippers? The spouts are long and silicone, similar to a nipple. He might put up less of a fuss? Just a thought?
Otherwise. Cold turkey, just like you have been. He'll get the message.

Relax and back off, maybe. You're annoying him, and now he's constipated on top of being annoyed. That's going too far, I think. Let it go and try again in a month. He may be ready then.

There is nothing wrong with a baby (kids are babies until 24 months) drinking from a bottle. Just make sure that he isn't carrying it around, and that he doesn't get sweet things that will ruin his teeth. Ease into this. I was very happy not to have the kids (raised four) on cups when they were running fevers from cutting teeth, or had their immunizations, as well as on our many long trips in the car. It was a lot easier to get fluid into them, and who needs to worry about constipation? By two years, they were drinking from cups. There is nothing magical about having a baby drink from a cup--Mommy is trained, baby is not. Life is hard enough--tell your Doctor to chill.
