We are in the process of trying to transition our 12 month old from formula to milk and she absolutley will not drink the milk! I've tried warming it up, mixing half formula half milk, etc. She eats all other dairy products, and most foods for that matter, without a problem, she just won't touch the milk. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all of the advice. She has been drinking the stage 2 formula for the past few months, and has done just fine with that. She does eat other calcium rich foods, so I guess I'll just wait and see what happens. She will drink milk if that's the only thing she's offered, but takes a few sips and puts her cup down, then comes back to it a few minutes later. She definitely has a mind of her own when it comes to foods!

B.,
I agree with Tammi. However, when transitioning children to milk could be a process. Like she said, tough love. If you give children too many choices then they know that they don't have to drink or eat what you give them and will refuse. My daughter knows that whatever I give her on her plate, that is what she is getting. No excuses. You have to be the one with the conscious of: Is my child getting enough nutrition. Also, you can also try pedisure. It is expensive more than milk, but it will help her like milk better. Good luck

Maybe he doesn't like milk. I personally don't think that milk is necessary for health. It's the calcium that he needs. Try giving him other dairy products, fortified rice or soy milk, or other good sources of calcium.

Personally I think warm milk is vile and like it only ice cold so I never did understand why some people warm it, but that's just me!! My son is given milk at dinner time. He cries, and I ignore him, and he figures out that there won't be anything else in his cup at dinnertime except milk. He gets over it and drinks some. We just finished weeks and weeks of swimming lessons and he couldn't have milk in the morning before swimming, then I'd be out for the day and carry juice or water, then he came home and didn't want milk. But too bad- that's all he gets in his dinner cup. Tough love. Drink it or don't but you're not getting anything else. If she eats other dairy products and gets protein and calcium from foods I wouldn't stress too much, but I would still keep giving it to her

make sure she gets "lots of other dairy sources", give her a choice of water or milk to drink - and relax! :-) this too shall pass, as they say. i don't like change very mich, either (who does, really?). she will adjust - once you are sure you are doing the right thing, then relax...she will be unhappy about thr change for a while - then will adjust - or...in the case of my daughter, it turned out she didn't just not like it. She was mildly lactose intolerant and had a "taste" for her own best interest...time will tell about that - and it is not all that serious...only one suggestion: did you try mixing a touch of milk with the formula and then very gradually increasing the ratio of milk to formula? (half and half may just taste way too much like milk for those who love their formula?)

good luck!

I had a similiar issue with my daughter. When I tried to give her milk in a sippy cup rather than her bottle she refused to drink it out of the cup. She would drink everything else out of her sippy but not milk! But, I had made the decision to take her bottle away, so I was forced to work around the problem. I just made sure that she was getting her calcium in other forms. At that age, they do not have to drink milk since their diet is now based on food products. The milk is just supplemental. As long as she is getting enough solid foods then the milk becomes just a part of their well balanced diet. Instead of the milk, my daughter gets yogurt, or yogurt drinks. I actually am in the process of phasing out the yogurt drinks because they have too uch sugar. Try the light vanilla soy milk. It is full of calcium and other vitamins and she loves it! I also make her smoothies with milk, or soy milk and bananas or other fruit. Usually, all you have to do is just add something to the milk to get them to drink it and they wind up getting the same amount of calcium, and now they are also gettng the added vitamins from the fruit that you add. Its a win win! Good luck:)

Have you tried the stage 2 milk by Similac or Enafamil?
Its cheaper than the regular formula but more expensive than whole milk. However, it has more calcium and nutrients than just regular milk and if your 12 mth old isn't eating a lot of veggies and fruit, then this may help. My 12 mth old drinks the stage 2 Similac and I'll probably keep him on this until he's about 17/18 mths and then make the transition to whole milk. Cost is $18 (walmart). However, i keep a lot of coupons and can get it for around $15. Hope this helps.
