Toddler Transition to Toddler Bed - Lincoln, NE

My daughter just turned 2 and my husband and I are discussing if we should move her to a toddler bed. She is still sleeping in her crib, and sleeps well at naps and through the night. We just lay her in bed and she falls asleep by herself. I think that most children her age are in toddler beds because they can climb out of their cribs, but she can't yet. I like the fact that she is safe in her crib all night long (the thought of her wandering scares me a little) but I also think she needs to learn independence of the crib. I was wondering if anyone has any advice, advantages, disadvantages, age appropriatness, etc.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I went out and bought some new Dora sheets and blanket (because she LOVES Dora). We changed her bed over when my husband got home from work on Friday. We let her play in it for awile, so she wouldn't want to play when it was time for bed. That night, she started feeling sick and fell asleep on the couch. Over the weekend she did really well, only coming out of her room a couple of times. It makes me sad that I don't hear her calling "Mommy" to come and get her, but it is so fun to see the pride on her face that she can do it on her own! Thanks for your suggestions!

We moved our daughter into a toddler bed at about 13 months. I had another baby less than two weeks after her first birthday, and I didn't want two in the crib. It was hard the first week or two to get her to go to sleep, she thought it was a lot of fun to be able to get in and out by herself. Now it is wonderful. She does not wonder around at all. She walks to her room, climbs into bed, we say her prayers, give hugs and kisses, and thats that. She might try to get out of bed once and we tell her to go back and she does.....she is 19 months now and it is more about testing me as I am sure you know! I hope it helps!

My daughter was the same way as yours...sleeping great in the crib and didn't try to climb out. We waiting until she was about 2 1/2. Best decision I made. We switched her to the toddler bed, and then about 4 months after that...she was already outgrowing that bed, so we switched to a normal bed. Never tried to get out at all...she just gets up by herself in the morning. Its great. My friend switched her daughter right at two, and she still doesn't sleep in her own bed a lot of the time....

We put our daughter in a twin bed just after she turned 2. We had a toddler bed but she thought it was for her animals because it was so low to the ground. I also worried about her roaming. So we got a twin and put a rail up and she was so excited. She slid off the end the first night and started to cry. I went in and said see you shouldn't get out of bed till Mommy and Daddy come in. We got really lucky because she never got out of bed again until we came in. Now she has been getting out on her own at age 3. I have been on bed rest and she gets up and crawls in bed with me but she still calls us in the middle of the night if she needs to go to the bathroom.
We I get to go back to work I am sure it will go back to us getting her up because she will still be sleeping when I get her ready.
Good luck

My belief with transitioning kids to a bed besides their crib is that it doesn't seem to matter the age the child moves. If you continue your same bedtime routine, they should continue their same bedtime routine, ie. lay down and got to sleep.

Of course, there is the occassional child that must test that theory. But, I found it true with each of my 3 children so far. And, more than likely, if she does get out of bed at night it will be to find you, not to wander around the house.

I did fear that with my first as well, and I put a baby gate at the top of the stairs so she couldn't go down without me. It turns out, I wouldn't have needed it.
