Transition from Toddler Clothing to Girls Sizes

Hi Moms-
My little lady is starting to wear 5T clothing, so last time I was at the store I started taking a peek at the Girls section. I am a little confused on the sizing; is 5T the same as 5 in Girls sizes or is 5 in Girls bigger than a 5T? I tried comparing the two, but since the styles are different in the two sections, I couldn't really tell. Thanks!

What can I do next?

To the best of my knowledge anything with a "T" allows more room for a diaper whereas 5 would be slimmer in the hip/rear area.

Hi
My little girl is 5 and 1/2 right now so I've been there! The saleslady at the store told me that 5T is a little smaller than 5 girls. I still prefer the 5T, though, because the styles are so much cuter. I would take advantage of that until your daughter grows out of the todder section. :) BTW Old Navy has some great clothes for that size.

Happy shopping!

My son just made that transition (he's 5) and 5 and 5T are pretty similar if if there is a 5T available. Some places start the regular kids clothes at 4. Different stores and brands vary a lot too. I found there was a lot of trying at first then I got an idea how things were cut in places I shop often. I have a boy and a girl and I find that pants need he most attention to fit for both. Shirts I just get them a little big.

From my experience, I have found the size 5 pants to be a little longer and a more slender fit than 5T. I switched my girls out of the toddler sizes around age 4 because the girls sizing fit them better (very slender and long legs). My son just turned 4 and he'll be getting boys sizes instead of toddler now, too.

You'll want to look at XS (4/5) in girls clothes. My son is on the same transition too. I've also found some size 5 (S) shirts fit him well too. But he is so skinny that he can still wear some 3T shorts!! lol

Happy Shopping!

Someone who deals in kids clothes once told me that there really is no such thing as a 5T - guess she doesn't shop at Target. Like all clothes, every brand is going to run a little differently, so it's tough to find something that fits well. One word of warning that I've noticed is that the Target brand clothes a lot of times run either really big or really small in the waist! It's a bit maddening to bring shorts or pants home and have them not fit well, so I've given up on those brands, even though the prices are so affordable. Good luck shopping!

I went through this with my girl not too long ago. She went through 4 and 5's in one summer and by the time school started in the fall she was in 6's. 5's seemed just a tad bigger (longer). Like others have said I think the "T" gives room for a daiper. That's the conclusion I came to. Although, I shopped in the toddler section as long as possible. The 5T's are cheaper and I have a hard time finding something I would let my little girl wear in the little girl section. I HAVE to shop in the little girls section now, but many of the cloths out there disgust me. I wouldn't let my teenager wear some of that much less my 5 year old! I say shop in the 5Ts as long as you can! :)

I generally don't see a lot of size five clothes in the girls department. I think most of the lines start at a six...so if you're seeing a five, it's probably similar. My oldest flew through the toddler sizes, and was wearing a five by the time she was 3 or so...but she spent almost 2 years in a five, and another in 6/7...which to me, are about the same. Clothes are so weird...every brand seems different. Now she wears an eight in pants and shirts, but an 8 in a dress in huge...ARGH! Good luck.

I think Yarrmatey (lol @ the name. love it!) has it... that's the same thing I have heard. The "T" allows for diaper room, while the normal size doesn't. (as far as I've heard... I haven't made it that far with my DD yet...)
