Transition from Cot to Bed and Own Room to Shared Room - Help?!

Hi moms! I have a kind of confusing situation. Currently my 21 month old DD shares a room with my husband and I. This is out of necessity as we currently live in a 2-bedroom apartment with my 15 year old stepson as well. DD has her own cot and sleeps well in it most nights (she usually snuggles with me in the early mornings so we can both get a little extra sleep). The question is this - we have been given a HOUSE to live in for the summer where she will have her own room for the first time. I cannot transport the cot to the house so should I a) get a travel cot for her to sleep in? And is that suitable for a 2-3 month stretch? or b) get a guard-rail thing for the side of the single bed that is already in the room she'll be sleeping in?

I don't really know at what age she should even be transitioned to a "big girl bed" - she hasn't tried to climb out of her cot yet, and I always thought that was when you took it away! But I guess my fear is that we'll get back to the apartment after the summer and I won't be able to get her to sleep in her bed because we'll all be in the same room again and she'll just be able to climb out! Or is that silly? But surely I couldn't then put her back into a cot either? Or do you think teaching her in her own room might make it easier when we get back?

Thanks in advance!!!

What can I do next?

If there is a single bed at the house i would just get a bed side rail to use and when you return home she may be ready for a big girl bed at the time.

well... I keep my kids in cribs (cots??) until they are 3 and somewhat reasonable..

but my kids never ever climbed out..
yes they make siderails for beds... check target walmart etc.

If you cant take the crib... buy a siderail for the bed adn once you get home put her back in her crib and I bet she will be happy to see her old bed.

Well I think I'd get a portable crib for the summer if I were you. I have a 32 month old daughter and she's STILL in her crib and I plan to keep her there until she really wants out. I;d share your concern about getting her to stay in her bed in your room back at your own apt after the summer.

I got this crib for vacations etc and I think it's great:

You also need to buy a little thicker mattress than the 1 inch pad it comes with.
Good luck!

Just a thought--could you rent a crib for the summer house?

I can see where you are coming from. I totally understand why you might just want to start putting her in the single bed now....she is old enough. The problem I see with that is because you said this borrowed house was only for the summer.

So, my answer depends on where you are going after the three months. If your daughter will go back to sharing your room with you after the summer is up....buy or borrow a pack-a-way cot for her to sleep with you in your room.

If you are moving to where she will already have her own room, I'd say you could try to transfer her now, simply because she is old enough.

My suggestion either way, is to let her continue sleeping in a cot in your room for the summer....SO THAT YOU CAN ENJOY YOUR SUMMER. After the summer is over, and you are back to settled into your normal place, then try to transitiion her to the new big girl bed. I personally wouldn't want to take most of the summer transitioning her, cuz it could possibly take that or at least half that, and then not get enough sleep myself and be able to enjoy the summer.
