Transition from Bassinet to Crib

It's time to make the transition from the bassinet to the crib. My little girl is 15 weeks old, and more than anything, has outgrown the bassinet! Does anyone have any helpful tips to make this tranistion smooth...or as smooth as possible? Do we need to let her cry it out? If so, how many sleepless nights should we expect?

What can I do next?

We went cold turkey to the crib last night with our four week old. He slept much better than the bassinet. As strange as this sounds, he never liked the bassinet, even at the hospital!

You might try putting a couple tightly rolled towels on the sides of the crib so it doesn't feel like such a big open space. They don't like that so much. And keep swaddling if you are doing so now.

It took about 3 full nights for my son to sleep all night in his crib. He's only been in it about 2.5-3 weeks now. First I'd have him take his naps in the crib, & then spend 1/2night in crib & 1/2 in bassinet. By night 3 he was in crib fully. We never had a CIO issue for him or with my daughter. He was about 13wk when he went to his crib.

The swaddling didn't work for me though, as my son decided at about 1 week out, that it wasn't for him & he got out of it.

I'd agree wit hother postiers about letting him nap & play in crib for a few days beforehand. Good Luck. & Hopefully you'll get some sleep!!!

Start out with letting her take naps in her crib. I do agree with a short "play" time in the crib as well (but not too much because then she will equate the crib with playing rather than sleeping!).

With my son, we waited WAY too long to put him in his crib - he was definitely too big for his bassinete. He did fine.

I am sure its normal to expect some transition time, but remember each child is different. I definitely agree with sleeping with a lovey or the sheet for a few nights so it gets your scent.

Best of luck!

Hello,
My daughter was younger (about 5 weeks) when we transitioned her from bassinet to crib, so I don't know if that plays in, but it actually went really well. She was too big for the bassinet and even when we swaddled her, her arms would break out, hit the sides and she would wake up! When we moved her to the crib she had so much more space and this wouldn't happen; we still swaddled her and used one of those infant positioners, but she did just fine, and we didn't have any more crying than in the bassinet. It was probably worse for me, since I became obsessed with the monitor now that she was in a different room. I still responded fairly quickly when she woke up to eat, and she didn't seem to notice a difference. It might help to put her in the crib when she's awake during the day and 'play' with her in there for a short period, so she knows it's a nice, friendly place. I hope it goes well for you!

Does she have a blanket, lovey, or some other item that 'smells' like her bassinet? If not take the sheet you are planning on using in the crib and sleep with it for a few nights so it smells like you. That might ease the transition.

You might be surprised to find that she makes the transition rather smoothly. Babies are much more resilient that we give them credit for. Just follow the same 'bedtime routine' you've always done and be patient and flexible.
