I have a beaitiful 4 month old boy. He is just a happy kids and plays by hinself most of the time. I am from India and having hard time figuring out what toys should I buy for him. My husband actually bought to much stuff for the baby and I feel that most of the toys my baby does not like. And we have harldy used them. He loves is papasan swing, but he has out grown it. I want to buy toys appropriate and useful for him. When I look at the toys everything looks interesting and I want to buy everything for him. At the same time dont want to spoil him.

Can you please suggest toys that are appropriate for his age, which will be useful to him and those that kids love?
Appreciate all your replies and thanks in advance

Hi S.

When my son was younger, I made him a variety of musical instruments to explore using recycled materials.

For a 4 month old, I would get him a shapes circle (you put the different shapes square, triangle etc) into the various holes.

Apart from that, I would recommend something like a hammer game.

Leapfrog has some really good toys to promote learning. I don't have any specifically in mind but I know they have toys for all age groups. They are very interactive toys. Every Leapfrog toy my daughter has come across she has loved playing with.

I found that toys that my son could chew on and were easily washable (either washing machine for soft toys or the dishwasher) worked best. I also liked the softer toys so that the times that he dropped them on his face or hit me while he was practicing using his limbs wasn't going to hurt him or me. He had a surprisingly strong sucker punch :-)

First of all, stay away from most "off brands" toys! Most of them are Made In China (and run the risk of having high lead paint). Anything that has chewy parts will be good (my 6-month-old chews on everything). The suggestion for a tummy time mat is good, but they outgrow that pretty fast (ours was entertaining for about a month). If you're interested in trying things out, I have a bumbo chair, tummy time mat, and other toys that my girl is already out-growing. Feel free to email me at: ____@____.com

S.,
Do you have some sort of tummy time mat. Both my girls loved them. It kept them very busy and happy while we were haveing out daily tummy time.

I would also suggest keeping it simple. Balls are always fun and they don't really grow out of them. Toys that are big enough he can try to grab them (toy keys, teehters...)

At four months they don't need a whole lot, they're still just trying to figure out their world!

One thing I loved with my second was the bumbo seat. It's not a toy, but she enjoyed being able to sit upright and watch everything going on.

Have fun with your presious son!!!

Oh, it's so hard to not buy every kind of toy! Your baby is still pretty little, so don't be discouraged if he doesn't want to play with them yet. He will eventually, and maybe not at the suggested age on the box. (But as someone else mentioned, make sure the toys are safe for little ones!) My 4-year-old will still pull out some "baby" toys he has and play with them in new and interesting ways. Have fun! :)

My biggest advice to give you is to look on the package and make sure it's marked for his correct age. My in-laws were constantly buying toys that were not safe or age appropriate for my kids and it drove me nuts! Also, I would get the name brand toys over the "generic" brand. They seem to hold up better. Good luck to you!

Tummy time mats are wonderful. So are exersaucers & bouncy seats. My son loved all of those at that age (so did his cousin who is the same age as my son).
Anything with buttons, music, or that can be chewn on are also great! Teethers that could be frozen were a big hit with my son (he still loves them at 9 months- he has no teeth yet).
Some of the toys you have, I'm sure e will play with evetually. My son is still playing with the toys we bought for him when he was 2-3 months old, so don't get discouraged with what you may already have!
