Totally Stressed!

Hi moms
Yesterday we took our daughter to her two-year checkup. Madi has always been a small kid, very petite, and has always been slow to gain weight. This time around she has not gained very much as usual. But my main concern is that the doctor seemed to be a little worried about her head size. He said that he didn't see any other signs to be worried about but he was going to consult with some pediatric partners and get back to me to see if it warrants any further testing, just to be sure. Of course, I am now finding myself analyzing every move she makes and questioning whether her head really is too small? At two, she is only 20 pounds 1 oz. She was 6lbs 3oz when born (not premature) and has been a teeny thing all along. She is a very good eater and a very very very active child..she doesn't even stop moving while sleeping. Also her dad has an incredible metabolism-he has been very lanky his whole life. We don't know much about his family history (doc wanted to know if people in the fam have small heads) but we do know that his mom was teeny teeny tiny. Neurologically and physically (besides the small size) Madi is doing wonderfully! She's even starting to recite her ABCs on her own and she can count to ten. Totally affectionate child, and very observant. No behavioral problems other than the normal 2-year old tantrums from time to time. I don't know if I should be worried or not. I guess I am just wondering whether any of you have gone through anything similar? What happened for you guys?

What can I do next?

Your little girl seems very bright! I don't know if this applies but when my daughter was in the womb they told me that her head was small and basically put me through hell worrying about her and she is perfectly fine.
Also, have them do several head measurements. Sometimes you get a nurse who couldn't measure a ruler accurately:) With my son , the Dr. was freaking out because his head was "too big" according the measurement. He wanted to run tests and I asked for another measurement and it was perfectly normal. Plus, every kid is different!
It's hard not to worry but I think the proof lies with your daughter. By any measurement she is smart, active, and sounds like she is a delight to you and that will never change!
Definitely do the tests if the Dr. recommends and take it as it comes. Don't borrow worry. Most likely she is just made small like you said!
Blessings on you!

She does sound extrememly tiny but you said your husband has always been lanky and his mother was small. So it looks like more of a genetic gene thing than anything wrong. As long as she is really eating and getting a great variety I think she will be just fine.

I wouldn't worry too much about this. My daycare person when she was younger doctors told her parents she was going to be retarted because her head was small...she's completely normal....small heads run in her family. Oh and she looks completely normal as an adult too. Sometimes they forget about the genetics....my kids heads are a little big, but so is thier dad and grandpa's....

Hi,

I kinda know where you are coming from my daughter is a very petite child also but has a normal head... At the age of 4 I was told that she wasnt following the curve that she was suppose to.. So they did test and told me that her bones were not growning with her body... Her bones were growning as a 2 year old... She is very out-going and my husband family is really petite also... I found out that she is finally out growning it and her body caught up with her... She is now 6 yrs old and still to this day is still very out-going... Your little one will grown into herself as she gets older... My daughter was 8lbs 8ozs at birth and 2 weeks early..

Thanks, P. B..

I had one like that and his doctor got very worked up about it. She had him admitted to the hospital for "tests" to rule out things like cystic fibrosis and other bad diseases. The tests took half a day to do, but she wanted him there for two weeks. I was a new mom and didn't know better. I found out that she was really looking at me to see if I was too depressed to feed him. She labeled him "failure to thrive." We had to deal with Child Protective Services and everything. It was a nightmare, but it turned out there was nothing wrong.
He just has a low awareness of when he is hungry. He is 21 now and graduating from college in a couple of weeks. I still occasionally ask him how he is eating because he honestly doesn't think about it. It was that way all along. He would just get involved in what he was doing and forget to eat.

Those charts don't account for genetic background and personality. They are just guide lines. My son never even made it on to the chart in his weight. He is still extremely thin, but perfectly healthy.

If she's doing all the normal things that a two-year-old usually does, I would let the doctors worry about her while you keep loving her and encouraging her to learn more. When she stops learning because she's not growing, then I'd get concerned.

Something else to consider... at one point the measurement of my son's head showed that it had not grown at all during a 3 month period, so they made me come back in to measure again a few times... turns out it COMPLETELY depended on who was making the measurement as each time his head was a different size. It was really ridiculous in my opinion, as he is a totally normal child.
