Top of Stair Gates

We just moved into a house with stairs that we need agate at the top for our nine month old. We don't want to put screws in the wood work on the staircase though. The other side is sheetrock and we could put something there. All the pressure gates say not to use at the top of stairs. Any ideas of what might work?

What can I do next?

In a few months you will have a toddler who will stand and shake that gate, so you really need one that screws in. Could you mount it to the wall (in a stud) on the top or 2nd step? or maybe just behind or in front of the moulding? If there is a hall leading to the stairs, you could also gate off the hallway rather than the stairs themselves. This is what we did in my back entry.

Do not use a pressure gate, it would be very unsafe!

Good luck,

They have "top of stair" gates that will screw into the sheetrock. Have had one at my house for 10 years and it's still in the wall.

Hi J.,

I'm not sure if I exactly understand what you need but I needed a gate at one time for the top of a staircase that had (newell) posts on either side and did not want to put holes into the wood posts. I did a bit of research on-line and was able to find a solution.

I have put a link of a site here that carries the type of gate I purchased. It is the first gate on the page and the brand is Cardinal. (You may have to copy and paste the link into your browser). I have had this gate in use for over two years now and it works great.

If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me.

J., I think that those cheap wooden ones from Target, etc are great! They just need to be postioned correctly and my 20 month old has never been able to knock them over!

There are clamps available so you don't have to screw into the wood. If you look at http://www.stairgatestore.com there are several varieties for different types of posts.
