I need to start brushing my son's teeth properly (we were using the infant gum cleaner up to now) I am a little confused with all the warning on these kids toothpaste. On some it clearly states to use from age 2 to adults, but I found another warning that if swallowed that I need to contact poison control?????!!! How on earth am I going to teach my son to spit out the paste/foam, I can barely teach him to drink from an open top cup.
Should I not be using this kids toothpaste, even though it states the age requirements, but then goes on to warn me about possible harm if swallowed?
Which would the best paste to use for his age (2)?.
Thanks

What can I do next?

I am wondering if you can look up stuff on the web on this and do some research on it. I also would look for a numbee on the product to call for the safety. I can not believe anything would put in the mouth would have to call poison control. My kids have used whatevery tooth paste and have not died yet. Talk to a dentist too, probably one for children. My daughter is two and still won't spit! I use Tom's of Maine toothpaste without floride for her. It has xylitol in it which is supposedly really good for cavity prevention. This one does cause a bit of foam (which is what I want because I want her to spit it out).

the flouride free is safe if he swallows it...even at this age even if you just used water that would be fine too! i use the flouride free & am teaching my daughter to spit it out...then once she gets this down i will switch toothpastes. but the tooth/gum gel that is flouride free is perfectly fine!

The age guideline is just that--a guideline. Typically parents are told to keep using the flouride-free paste until their child is able to spit it out and not swallow the toothpaste. I would keep using the toddler "training" toothpaste until he can do this.

I am a dental hygienist and until he learns not to swallow toothpaste he needs to be on a non-fluoride toothpaste. I think it might be called toddler toothpaste. Anything is fine as long as it does not contain fluride. However, fluoride is very important for kids. As soon as he learns not to eat or swallow it, switch him to a fluride toothpaste.
