Hello. I have heard people have some special ways to handle some of the special moments in our kids lives... like the toothfairy. Do you ladies have any ideas to help me make the event special? I've heard of fairy dust (sparkle powder from a craft store) on the windowsill and by the bed. I figure I'll need to plan ahead, because you just never know which day the first tooth will fall out.

Well it happened, with a little help. The tooth was hanging on and looking so gross... I was sure she'd mess with it during the night and swallow it, so my husband pulled it out.
I made her a little "tooth pocket" out of felt (like the one I had as a child) with a great big smiley face on it and her initials in silver thread on the back. I think this was her biggest excitement. She wanted to show all the neighbor kids her tooth pocket.
We left the tooth fairy a note, asking if we could keep the tooth because Mom really wanted to have the first baby tooth. The toothfairy left her a wonderful note telling her how proud she was that my daughter was brushing so well. She left the tooth and left her one of the gold colored $1 coins and a half dollar. The tooth fairy left foot prints on the note in pink eyeshadow (but it wasn't really obvious because the only Barbie shoe we had was high heel so it left a funny outline). I used a glue stick to adhere the eye shadow shoe prints so it wouldn't brush off. The tooth fairy even left some fairy dust on the note, her bed and on her.
Funny part is, my daughter decided the "fairy dust" was from her dress and it fell off when she kissed her... thus why it was on her head. She was actually rather irritated that it was everywhere, but I guess it may have been a bigger hit if it was sparkle powder from makeup (much finer) instead of glitter which was coarse. She wanted to send the tooth fairy another note asking her to not leave her any more money, instead she wanted to meet her and talk to her face to face. :)
Kids are great. She loved it and is very proud to have a hole in her smile.

There is a wonderful book about the "truth" about the toothfairy that explains that the toothfairy always comes looking like someone the child loves so that they are never afraid if they see her. I can't remember the exact title since it came out about 15 years ago but it is a great book once the kids start asking about her.

I actually left my Daughter a Memo from the Tooth Fairy, she had lost her tooth at school and threw it out with her lunch! She was so upset and thought she wouldn't get anything under her pillow that night. She Loved the fact that the Toothfairy actually left her a note! Just a cute little idea for you!

Our son just lost his first tooth last week. His Great Aunt made him a special pillow with his name on it and a little pouch for his tooth. He slept with his special pillow and the toothfairy left a $5 bill to spend and also a special coin to save as a keepsake. The coin was a silver 1/2 dollar and was is a special case. He was very excited about his special coin! The toothfairy also left a little note congratulating him on losing his first tooth. I wish I would have thought about the glitter for the fairydust!
I love all the ideas and I'm excited to try some out in a few years! I wanted to mention a necklace my friend makes that I love. Not sure my son would feel the same :) but for my daughter it would be fun.

I've given my kids rocks, chrystals and minerals of different kinds for each of their teeth - both of my kids love to discover what surprise the tooth fairy might have left them. I stocked up on them so I always had a few extra on hand just in case.

My brother and I both put our first toot in a special pillow made to hold a coin. We left out baby books open by the pillow. Tooth fairy left us our first tooth for our baby books. My mom took a barbie shoe with pink eyeshadow to make the foot prints to my tooth in the book. For my brother she used a Ken shoe and green eyeshadow. My brother and I just knew the tooth fairy had left those foot prints and the tooth just for us. From then on when we lost a tooth it went in the pillow and a coin would appear in the morning and those footprints would be on our window sill and by the pillow on our dresser.
We had a special pillow for the tooth. Not only was it cute but they hung on the bedroom door so it made it easier to get the job done without waking the kids.

This time, when my children were young, was one of my favorite parts of being a mom - providing the MAGIC!
I inherited some old coins from my grandfather - silver dollars, Mercury dimes and buffalo head nickels, as well as some old 2 dollar bills and silver certificate dollars. I used to leave the kids these special pieces of money under their pillow. Because they had never seen that type of money before, they thought it was "special" - and of course, it was and still is, as they have started coin collections themselves! If you don't have any old coins or bills, the bank sometimes has different any special types of money.

A friend of mine started a charm bracelet for her daughter and the tooth fairly would leave a charm for her bracelet under her pillow rather than money. I'm not sure what the "boy version" of this would be but I really like this idea for a girl.
While the going rate for the tooth fairy has probably gone up since I was young, the 'tooth fairy' would leave a half dollar coin under my pillow for each of my teeth. It was special since it wasn't a coin often used, and often it would have a shiny stick-on star on it to make it seem really special. Nowadays, you could use the dollar coins. I think the coins are more of a novelty than just getting a dollar bill.
One thing that we did when my son and daughter lost their first teeth was to write a letter to them about how good they were taking care of their teeth. This prompted my son to brush without being told (not the intended purpose). Along with the letters, we left "fairy dust" all around the house from the front door to their bed and under their pillows. One year the tooth fairy left special toys for them. It was like a scavanger hunt. Instead of money under the pillow, they had a clue...which led to more clues...which led to the gift from the tooth fairy. That was fun for all of us.
Good morning E.. I think you can never go wrong with glitter by the window to show the toothfairy came. If you have any stray feathers, that could also be reflective of her fairy wings too. My sister who has three beutiful children (7,4 and 2) told me that they mix together oatmeal (dry obviously) and glitter and put it on their sidewalk for the reindeer to see in an effort to guide Santa to their house. We just lost our first tooth! We left the tooth in a glass of water on the kitchen table. The fairy took the tooth, colored the water (with food coloring) and sprinkled everything with fairy dust. She even doused my daughter while she was sleeping. She was so proud to be sparkling at school. The fairy left a note, a new toothbrush and paste, a book and a couple dollars. My daughter lives at her father's house too. She knows the fairy does something different each time so we are going to experiment leaving the teeth on the table, under the pillow, etc. Sometimes she'll get something special such as a lip gloss or nail polish , sometimes just a couple coins. The fairy dust is a must! We also left the fairy tea and cookies on a pretty plate.
The Easter Bunny shed pieces of his tail from the front door to the baskets one year. My daughter collected the cotton 3 years ago and still saves it (she's 5 now).
This year the Easter Bunny called my girl. She is still upset we didn't ask him for his phone number.
My all time favorite is something my aunt did for her girl. You know Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and the Land of Misfit Toys? Every year Santa leaves a broken toy for my daughter because he knows she will still love and appreciate it. One year it was a stuffed animal with a hole in it's seam. Another year it was a Barbie cruise ship with missing pieces. This year will be a discolored Webkinz. Yard sales are a great source for these items.
Glad to know there are other crazy moms out there...I sometimes get very weird looks!
