J.,
If you don't already have a CareCredit account, you could go that way. It's basically a credit card for medical & dental bills. Most of the time, especially if you request it of the Dr. when they charge it, you can get 6 months to a year interest-free (depending on the Dr.) which gives you time to pay it off without any additional cost. You can apply for it on line.

I wouldn't wait if I were you. My husband put off going to the dentist for months, and ended up having to have a very expensive root canal.

There is nothing you can do, short of taking Advil for the pain, other than just get them out.

i got a lot of dental work done in mexico for cheap! unfortunately, bad timing for that i guess! but for future referrence, i had 7 fillings and a full cleaning for under $250. i could have had my wisdoms pulled for about $100 more, but decided i'd wait til they grew in. hope this helps!

J., for a toothache I take a small piece of cotton; wet it; roll it in a small ball then roll it in clove spice (powder). Place it on the gum or tooth and just press down on it with your other teeth (simular to biting on gauze when a tooth is pulled) Clove is a natural pain killer.

White Willow Bark Tea is a natural way to get pain relief. Sucking on ice and letting it sit on the back of your mouth might help too. Wish there was more advice to give you. Hope your teeth will come through quickly and the pain eases for you.

Hello J., when I wore braces (at 40 yrs old!) and was in a lot of pain my doctor recommended that I use a 50/50 mixture of children's liquid benedryl and milk of magnesia, basic store brand works. Mix the two, I only used a couple of drops each, then apply to the sore gums with a q-tip. The mixture numbs mucous membrane, reduces swelling and helps get rid of the soreness. Use this in combination with either tylenol or ibuprophen to attack the pain from the inside and the outside. It sounds strange, but it works. It's only temporary help, but any help is better than none. You don't have to have all of your wisdom teeth pulled at the same time---big expense and 10 days down time, but can elect to have only one done at a time. I had mine removed one every six months which allowed me to pay cash each time by saving up for the procedure. This also allowed me to continue to work every day with no down time or missed work, and to be able to eat on one side while the other healed. ALWAYS ask your dentist for a discount due to no insurance or financial stress, you will be surprised at the ones that actually have compassion; and, ALWAYS ask for a payment plan, many of them have such programs. Good luck! (^_~)

Try baylor college of dentistry in dallas. They are tons cheaper. The process is a little different because it is a school but the care is good and the moeny is right on. Believe me you wont have to worry about a student not knowing what to do because they are so supervised it is almost crazy. They can't breath without permission first. Check it out! I just finished up my treatment plan over the course of a year (once you start you have to continue or you are out of the program). Crown $280.00, tooth pulled $19.00 etc...

Have you tried one of the local dental colleges? You can have dental work done at a much cheaper rate by a graduate who is trying to get experience and is under the supervision of and being trained by a licensed dentist. I don't know if they base it on your income or accept insurance or not but, if you are in significant pain, it would be worth checking with them to see if they will help you.

I can definitly relate to that.My wisomd teeth have been coming in for a long time now.We dont have the money either so i just waited it out they are almost completly in now.i thought I was going to have to have them cut out but after waiting it out I think it fixed itself. Here is the problem if you are anything like me it probably hurts because there isnt enough room for your wisdom teeth to come in.Good news your mouth wil eventually make room or at least mine did.Bad news when it does it shifts your teeth around and some may go a little crooked.Kanka worked the best for me but you have to find the one that looks like a pen with a brush on the end.The one in the little glass bottle is just a mess.Good luck i hope you get to feeling better.Just make sure you keep an eye one it for any kind of infection that can be very serious. If you dont have insurance there is a dentist here that doesnt take insurance so he charges a lot less than others would.I am in lubbock not sure if you are from here or not but there may be one like that in you area also who might work with you on prices.

The only thing that you can do to totally eliminate that pain is to get those suckers pulled! They're prone to infection and abscess which makes them more expensive. Try to find a dentist that will put you on a payment plan. In the meantime, take advil and if the pain is bad, see if your dentist can prescribe you some stronger pain meds.

My husband and I have both been through this--having to wait--so I can relate. Oragel, which you can buy over the counter, will temporarily help. Perhaps you can find an oral surgeon who is willing to do non-interest payments? in any case, good luck!

I have two different friends who travel to Mexico for all of their dental needs. They go to highly trained dentists just like we have here. I pictured back alley slum-like conditions and that is not what they said it is like at all. A friend of mine has had over $6000 worth of dental procedures done for about $1200 there. She is very happy with the work.

Another idea is dependent on just how low your income actually is. If you qualify for healthcare through the JPS Network, you will qualify for their dental plan, as I understand it. Co-pays are generally $10 or $20 and that's it.

Also, the same thing goes for Mission Arlington. If you are accepted for their program, you can get free or next to free dental care. If you don't live in Arlington, call them and see who they recommend similar to their program, in your city. Good luck!

A dentist told me that Advil is the best for tooth pain. I needed a root canal badly & couldn't get in for 2 weeks. I took 4 Advil every 4-6 hours to get by - it's probably not the best thing to do but it worked for me.

One home-thing you can do is use oil of cloves on the area to help reduce the pain. You can also hold a cloves (from the spice cabinet) on that area of your mouth and it will help deaden the pain. There is a chance that the pain will go away when the tooth breaks through, assuming there is enough room in your mouth for the wisdom tooth.
If you don't have a local dentist to call for advise, you might call the dental school in Dallas. They do have a program that you can go for dental work at a much reduced cost because they are training new dentist. You get the services of the latest technology and have an expert overseeing your service, even though the guy doing the work is still learning.

As a dentist once told me..."now you know how a baby feels"!
I was in high school and they hurt so bad I couldn't eat! So, just know that they are big teeth coming in at a location of your mouth that feels too small to handle it. Ibuprofin is your friend (antiimflamitory/pain relief) Ice packs work well too, the dentist will not do anything for you unless there is infection involved. Truly, take your Motrin (up to 800 mg every 4-6 hours) drink milk to buffer your stomach with it, and ice it as often as you can (20 min on/20 min off) Feel better, this is something you can prepay your dentist for until you have enough to have them extracted. Wisdom teeth are like tonsils, no reason to have them, but they are there all the same!

Dear J.,

Does your mouth have room for your wisdom teeth? If not, then maybe you can find a dentist who will be willing to let you do payments so you can pay it off over time.
If you truly have to wait, then I would go the route mentioned by others: anti-inflammatory drugs, ice and perhaps mind control/Lamaze breathing exercises/etc.

Hope you get some relief soon, poor thing.

PS I went back and read some of the posts more thoroughly. There are some good ideas there. I do hope you get some relief.

I agree with the other people who say that they just need to be pulled. You could actually look for a dental college, as they might have less expensive prices, as they're looking for people to gain experience under the watch of teaching dentists. Other than that, I would imagine most dentists do have payment plans. You MUST get it taken care of.

Alternate tylenol with advil. Take the advil wait 2 hours then take the tylenol. Keep doing that and it will keep the medicine at peak levels. This will also keep you from getting too much of one medicine. Don't exceed 2400 mg of ibuprofen nor 3600 mg of acetaminophen in 24 hours. Also, I wouldn't do this for more than a few days but it will tide you over until you can get in to the dentist. Also, rinse with some salt water in the area incase your gums are irritated. If this doesn't produce any relief within 24-48 hours, you will have to go to the dentist. You may have an infection in the tissue around the tooth and need an antibiotic.

From experience they more than likely won't "come in" They need to get out ASAP My mother went through that when she was in her thirties and they all abcessed and she lost every tooth in her mouth. She was wearing dentures in her thirties. My daughter is 20 and we took her to the dentist with this problem, he said it only gets worse. Until eventually you will end up in the hospital with the worst infection until you get them out. He was treating a girl 18 yrs old in the hospital for that. You don't need to wait for this.

I'm not a dentist but I'm thinking maybe Advil or Aleve would help (if you can take those). I'd do about 800 mg of Advil or 2 Aleve. You can also use local anasthetic like orajel or something over the counter. Also, be sure it is the wisdom tooth coming in that's bothering you and not the tooth next to it. That happened to me once and I ended up getting a root canal on the wrong tooth. Good luck!!!

J. the bad thing about wisdom teeth is that when they start showing up you have the possibility of infection because of the acidity this bring to your mouth, so the faster you can take care of it the better for you and your dental health. Talk to your local orthodontist, talk about a payment plan. Things are hard for him also, but you will never know of your possibilities if you don't ask him.

Praying that things get better soon for everybody

J.,
I feel for you...I once experienced the same thing. If you choose to see a dentist I recommend checking out AmeriPlan first. For you alone it is only $14.95/mo or $19.95/mo for an entire household (related or not). No contracts. You can get dental care for up to 80% off the usual cost. Example: In the DFW area, an oral exam is usually $103, but with AmeriPlan it is $30. (This same plan includes similar discounts on vision, prescriptions and chiropractic care.) For more info go to www.DNShealth.net . I would be happy to sanwer any questions you may have at ###-###-####. Hope you feel better. ~ N.

I am sorry for your pain - I experienced that shortly after being married. If they are still comming, I don't think there is much you can do other than have them pulled. or cut out, Mine grew in sideways, so ouch - I missed a week of work. Try calling Baylor Dental college down on Gaston Avenue. They might be able to give you a discount since it is a teaching hospital. There will be very wualified dentist there doing the work and student observing and helping. I had a silver-post crown removed there from childhoos and my dentist sent me there because there are not many of these seen anymore. THe Dentist had been is practice many years and was himself going back for another degree. Hopefully they can help out with the cost. Good luck.

I know people mentioned Baylor. If you have not called yet, it is a good possibility but I know there is always a waiting list and sometimes it can be pretty lengthy. You could try an oral surgeon but they tend to charge more but they also do this day in and day out and they know what they are doing....Dr Martin in Lewisville is wonderful. Or you could go to a regular dentist but sometimes they will not extract difficult wisdom teeth (ie: impacted ones)...the more the teeth are out of the tissue the better and easier it is on you but you don't have a lot of options right now since you are experiencing pain. I would check out offices that offer care credit or wells fargo credit options....I know they have no interest for 6-12months and maybe even longer at some offices. Good Luck. If you need any referrals, I can give those to you if you haven't found somebody you trust.
