My son in 8.5 months and seems to drink more formula than recommended for his age. He eats about 3 meals a day and snacks on those puff things by gerber. He has a 6 oz. bottle 6 to 7 times a day as well. I have read elsewhere that 3 to 4 times a day up to 28 oz of formula is normal for this age. He can drink up to 42 oz. a day. You would think he would be chunky but he is about 18.5 lbs. Only has gained a pound since his 6 month check up. He looks way healthy and is thriving and very active... any thoughts?!

What can I do next?

He seems healthy to me. If you are really wanting to cut back on the formula I would just try to supplement more food. He must just be a really hungry little guy. I personally wouldn't cut back any food unless he seemed to be over weight or something...some kids just eat more than others. Just my two cents.

Sounds like to me that he is taking a bottle to often to me. At that age he should be drinking water also (from a sippy). Try spacing out his bottles to every 4 hours, if he is eating 3 meals and snacks then he doesnt need one that often. At 8.5 months both of my boys were only take 4 bottles a day if that example helps you.

Your son knows how much he wants/needs, no one else. As long as he's not vomiting it up afterwards (from over-stuffing himself), he's totally fine. Different kids have different metabolisms.

I would suggest that you feed him a meal, some fruits, veggies, meat (optional) I was told a good serving amt for each is the size of an ice cube like the ones you make yourself. Then if he is still hungry give him another half serving of each then finish with formula ... and do not give just a bottle of formula at snack time only use it to "finish" a meal so to speak. But really aside from spending all the money on formula I see nothing wrong.

My doctor has told me that my 7 month old is drinking too much formula, and my son seems to be on close to the same diet as yours...she has told me to increase his cereal....give him water....give him juice and he still takes that much milk. I just honestly think they want what they want....obviously he isn't unhealthy; I dont think either of our boys are....

I wouldn't worry too much. My son drank an incredible amount of formula (especially when you calculate out how many calories he is taking in) and his pediatrician wasn't worried. You could try more meals but I wouldn't limit his intake unless your doctor recommends. You can also make sure he has the option of drinking water (not juice - just empty sugar calories).

Are you sure he doesn't have a tape worm?! I'm just joking...a little lab humor moment!

On a serious note, he's very active! While 6 or 7 six oz bottles sounds like a lot (I can't get my 8.5 month old to drink 20 oz and he's over 20 lbs!!) it sounds like it's just what he needs. You should be having a 9 month well baby soon. I would just ride it out and ask the pedi at his next visit!
