Too Much Fluid in the Brain?

At a recent ultrasound I was told it appears there may be an abnormal amount of fluid in the fetus's brain. They are sending me to a specialist to get it checked out. Has anyone else heard of this before?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your encouragment and prayers! We went to the specialist and everything is perfectly normal. Thank goodness! Our doctor is young and we are finding that she is very cautious. Better safe than sorry though. Thanks!

Hello K., I just want you to know that although things sound alarming most of the time they are not. I had a friend who recently had a beautiful, healthy baby girl. She too was told that her baby's brain had fluid. However, after going to the specialist and another ultrasound, her result was normal. So do not be scared, do not speculate and wait for you to see the specialist. You and your baby will be in my prayers and I am hoping for the best for you all.

Please don't google anything or self-diagnose. Get to the specialist and let them tell you what they see - otherwise you are just going to freak yourself out!

I'm sure that's enough to freak you out. It would me. However, I had a neighbor with twins and one had water one the brain. She had a shunt when she was smaller, and she had developed into a beautiful little girl.

Whatever it is, the doctors are phenomenal these days!

Hydrocephalus or water on the brain is a pretty common issue. Because of that it is very treatable. What I would suggest is to not get stressed about it until you have all the facts. Once you've seen the specialist if you don't feel that you have enough information go get a second opinion. Talk to your OB too I am sure that they can answer some of your questions. Although the internet and sites like Web MD have a lot of great information, I would not rely on the information for a self diagnosis, but it doesn't hurt to research more about the condition. BUT don't stress until you've talked to your doctors and have all the facts!

I'll be thinking good thoughts for you! I'm sure it's nothing to worry about.

The person who did the ultrasound when my daughter was carring her child told her the same thing and it really made her OB mad. He's fine. Who suggested you see a specialist? Difinately see one, but be calm. It may be nothing.

My cousin had water on the brain and had a shunt to release this fluid. Don't know much else about it.

I will say a prayer for your child and you. Its key to research and keep on your doctors to get the best medical care possible, these days we have to push more than ever to get good medical care.
