My MIL & FIL want to take my 2 1/2 y/o to six flags tonight or at least this week. It's 100* outside!!! Can I say no?
They do live locally and have been so excited to take her to the toddler area since last summer! They bought the family season tickets so its hard for me to say "no" and my husband says that its up to me?!?! Long story short, they left around 6 and they're getting ready to leave and drop her back off at home soon. Thanks for all of the advice!
I spoke too soon- "she was having so much fun" they decided to stay until close!!!! And then drive home (Frisco)! Grandma/Pa will NEVER be doing this again!!!
six flags will be fun starting about 730 or 8 pm. Pretty Unbearable for children and the elderly before then. Depending on his bedtime, that wont leave much time to play. Why not suggest a splash park or the aquarium instead.

say NO! Heat stroke, heat exhaustion, etc. I don't know why your MIL and FIL would even want to go.
For heaven's sake yes you can say 'no'. Not only is it too hot, there really isn't much for a 2.5 yr old to do. There is a small section, and I mean small, that has rides for toddlers, but that is it. Hawaiian Falls could be better (and cheaper) by going later in the day... A night at the Great Wolf Lodge would be a blast for a little tot!
Yes ma'am. Hes even too little for the water rides.
If he was 10, sure go for it. But I wouldn't want to take a 2 1/2 yr old out in this weather.
You're the parent, and ALWAYS have the authority to say no when you feel it is in the best interest of your child, especially at 2 1/2. I see that they did go, but called to tell you they were staying until closing. If you were not comfortable with that, it would have been ok for you to tell them that you thought that was a long enough day for your little one, and that you'd like them to stick with the original plan. Be firm next time. (btw, I'm a grandma to 4 ~ oldest is 6 ~ so I know how much grandparents love to spend special time with their grandchildren, but parent's wishes need to be respected.)
Oh heavens yes!! If my 5 yo is walking as slow and sluggish as she is from the parking lot into Target, then a full day of that, no thank you! Are your in-laws not from here?? I'd let them know you don't feel it's safe to have your young little one out in this kind of heat, so let's wait till it cools off a bit and go around the end of September or so. Besides, a 2 yo won't think 6 Flags is as cool as a teenager. Take your 2 yo to Legoland instead at the Grapevine mall plus the new Sea Life Aquarium is opening up next week, your 2yo would love that much better!!
Of course, you can. my son is a little over two, no way I'd take him to Six Flags right now!! Remember, the temperature is measured in the shade. And, on that hot asphalt it can add so many degrees to the temperature.

But, you could also consider talking to them about keeping the child well hydrated, shaded and on lots of water rides!

Yes. Suggest something else you can all do together that is indoors. Like the Dallas World Aquarium or Legoland in Grapevine. It is very easy for young children to overheat.
You absolutely should say no.
Most 2 year olds don't know how to express that they are overheated and not feeling well. Besides, there's not much he can do at 6 flags anyway. If it were my parents or in laws (and yes, my parents and in laws would come up with something that nuts..) I'd say let's come up with an alternative outing.
We went last week and it was very hot but we brought water and they refill our bottles for free. We didn't bring our 2 1/2 year old. There are only a couple of rides at Looney Tunes a child that young can ride. Otherwise, your child would be pushed in a stroller and very hot. I have not been there but I have read about the Indoor Safari Park which seems more on that age level. I would save Six Flags is a little older.
Um yep! We have season passes and have been once. We will for holiday in the park! Im leary to let my 15 yr old go and he's not a baby!
way too hot, wont be fun. I think your parents will thank you later for not allowing it. they must already be ~affected~ by the heat to even want to venture it, haha.
Maybe you could suggest another "smaller" location that is more little kid friendly? Do you have a local zoo or small kid entertainment area such as a kids museum that would be more appropriate for the heat and age groups involved?
your child will out last your inlaws. the evening is always cooler than during the day even if the temp is 100's. your inlaws want to spend some time with their grandchild. we live in texas, it's hot. i hate the heat with a passion but i won't let it keep me from having fun. if i'm outside one day then the next i take it easier. W. d.
