Tonsils & Adnoids Removal Surgery for 2.5 Yr Old

I wanted to hear from other moms who've had their toddler's tonsils and/or adenoids removed. My 2.5 year old will be having the surgery on Dec 18th, and a sinus irrigation at the same time. She's had multiple sinus infections and snores, has swollen tonsils, and seems to talk through her nose at times. Any advice about what to expect after surgery, or what she can/can't eat would be great. Thanks! :)

What can I do next?

My son had his tonsils and adnoids removed at the age of 2. It was a day surgery. He did great. He ate ice cream for a day or so and then soft food, chicken noodle soup, less the chicken, mashed potatoes, jello. Any thing soft, but tasty and that will not scratch the throat for a few days. When I felt like he could eat without any damage to the healing of the throat, we went about our normal routine. I used Tylenol and Motrin for pain and a low grade fever.

My son had his taken out when he was 4 1/2. You usually don't have to stay the night in the hospital and the child can be with you in acomfortable place at home. However since I am allergic to anesthesia, they kept him overnight. So if your little one needs to stay the night. Take movies, their favorite stuffed animal, and coloring books and such. The only thing that really bothered my son, was the IV in the hand. They had to wrap it up like crazy so he wouldn't rip it out. The hospital will give them popcicles which HELPS A LOT!!! Get them for home as well. Make sure your child keeps a cup in their hand so their throat doesn't dry out, because it is possible the scab could fall off if dry which could tear and cause more bleeding. If your child starts to bleed, take her to the ER or doc ASAP. Also don't let them having anything red, because you won't know if she is bleeding or not. We just went through this year, so it is alls till fresh in my mind.

She will be fine but in pain for about 1 week with a sore throat. Her breathe will be TERRIBLE and that's normal, nothing to do with hygiene. Some folks say mashed potatoes are easy to eat but with our experience they really felt worse on the throat because they kind of get stuck when swalling. Chewing is no problem at all, just the swalling is painful. I vote ANYTHING that she'll eat, go for it. Definitely LOTS of ice cream like everyone will say. It will keep something in her system and make her feel like she's getting a treat at the same time. And of course, tons of hugs during recovery will get you both through it more easily. Good luck!

My 3 year old had this surgery (tonsils & adenoids removed) in June. Right after surgery he got done he was very drowsy and slept on me awhile and I rocked him. Our ENT has all children 3 & under stay overnight in the hospital, which was nice because he had an IV to keep him on fluids (very good). When we got to our hospital room he started coughing some and got really nauseated and threw up. Wasn't expecting that, so be prepared have extra clothes for you and her(she will have a gown, but bring extra comfy pants and socks). Have something ready (a pan) to catch the throw up in if that happens (may be it won't). He sounded pretty raspy and congested sounding for the first couple of days. We had a really hard time getting him to eat/drink anything. I just basically had to follow him around trying to give him sips of things or bites of ice cream. He ate a lot of cheese, some ice cream (not a whole lot), some pudding, ensure/pediasure/slimfast drinks. He just really didn't want much at all. They will tell you, no chips, foods with edges (pizza crust), anything hard to swallow. Liquids are the most important to keep her hydrated. He didn't eat/drink much at one time, so I just kept offering him things throughout the day. Good luck!

I would do some serious research for yourself before you make this decision. Seems like maybe you are questioning whether or not you should do it..??
It does seems to help some people... However, one must consider--the tonsils are in place as a 'customs' port of some sort for the body. When bacteria, etc., are taken into the body through the mouth, the tonsils will grab them up when possible. The tonsils are getting infected because there is something wrong with them...they are just doing their job, and that's good : ) As for Adnoids, I don't know as much about them... But I do know everything is in our body for a reason. Removing any of it is serious business--you can't get it back. I would just look into it and read about each part's function, and perhaps see if there are any alternatives to surgery. If she has had other health complications, I would REALLY think about it...
Blessings,
H.

My daughter ad tubes put in her ears and he tonsil and adenoids removed at the same time when she was 2. She had a sore throat for a few days, and I gave her Tylenol and soft foods during that time. Cold foods such as frozen yogurt, sherbet, popsicles, apple juice, and Jello were easier for her to swallow than hot foods such as soup.
