My 4 year old just had her tonsils removed and is miserable. She is taking tylenol with codeine every 4 hours and its not helping much. She is hungry and has somewhat of an appetite but can barely swallow. I put a humidifier in her room last night and she used an ice pack for a little bit on her throat. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can help her relieve the pain just a little???

What can I do next?

Hi S.,
My son had his tonsils out 2 years ago and we had the same issue. I agree with all of the previous moms with their suggestions. The only thing I would add is to allow her to chew gum. Gum keeps her salivating and thus will keep her throat moist.

I had another friend whose daughter had her tonsils out the day after my son and they were out eating grilled cheese the 2nd night and my son was still eating soup after a week. Some kids just have more issues with pain management and healing. I would say that it took us a good 10 days before we were close to normal.

If she stays hydrated and chews gum and rests (alot!), she will start feeling a little better each day.

Hi S.,

I feel for your litle one! My daughter had her toncils out last may and it was also heartbreaking! I gave her a lot of popsicles and sherbet(sp?) it helped her a lot....the Dr. told me no milk for the first couple of days because it produces phlem like substances, so i made sure she was well hydrated. Just give her lots of cold fluid it will soothe her sore throat, like the other mom said stay away from orange juice or acidic juices like that which can irratate her throat. Hope this helps and hope your little ange feels better soon!

I was going to suggest Ice Cream coz that's what they did when we were kids, but it sounds like the milk thing is an issue. Find some non dairy ice products like sorbet and sherbet. Make it as fun as you can I remember when we were kids we all wanted to get our tonsils out so we could eat as much ice cream as we wanted. (I wasn't lucky enough to get mine out!) Good luck and try to give lots of distractions...

One of my girls had her tonsils out just after her 4th b-day. It was heartbreaking at night when she would cry because it hurt. I bought Pediasure drinks and kept them in the coldest part of the fridge, sometimes puttting them in the freezer for a little bit. She also ate popsicles and that seemed to help alot. Stay away from anything with any cirtrus since that can irritate due to the acidic content. I have heard others say no milk products but my daughter ate frozen yogurt sticks with no problems and the doc never told me no milk products. They seemed to help a bit. Anything cold. I hope this gives you some ideas. it is hard when we can't take away the pain. But this won't last too long.

I had two that had there tonsils removed. They both loved to just suck on those ice pops. I would buy the big box at Walmart and they could have as many as they wanted. I also would do cold jello and cold applesauce. Even apple juice cold. I would give them a crazy straw so it was a little fun. Hope this helps. T.

It's very important to keep her throat moist to stop the pain. Water is the best . Try some fun straws . Popsicles are great but stay away from anything with milk. When she can eat try mashed potates or soft lightly buttered pasta. Also I would keep icing her throat off and on for 10 mins at a time. It really helps.
