Tonsillectomy - Keller,TX

My son just saw his ENT for his 6 mo tube check. Every thing was good but the Dr noticed his tonsils were huge. This was not a surprise. I have noticed myself and his pediatrician also has had some concerns esp because of his snoring. They have suggested having his tonsils removed in the future due to possible sleep apnea. They believe it could cause problems when he starts school if he is not getting good rest at night.

He also takes really long naps. Sometimes he will nap for 3.5 hours. I put him to bed at 8:30 and he sleeps until about 6:30 to 7:30. He also has a strong gag reflex when eating and the Dr said it could be from his tonsils being so large that it is hard to swallow at times.

If it has to be done, I am on board but I don't want to jump the gun either. He's not even 3 yet. What should I expect? How was the recovery?

What can I do next?

My almost 3 yr old had her tonsils and adnoisa removed on 3/6. I can guarantee there will be pain, sleepless nites, but when she heals, I am convinced that she is going to feel better. Snoring has already stopped, and her speech is clearer. Her tonsils were HUGE!! I would follow the advice of the ENT. Just make sure that you get the medication flavored that they write for you. It is terrible! After day 2 1/2 my little one would not take it and she is now taking Motrin and Tylenol around the clock! (She ate 4 chicken nuggets Sunday and her surgery was Friday) She still hurts and her breath is terrible, but I see the light at the end of the tunnel. Best of luck to you and your little one!

My daughter had her tonsils and adenoids out at 18 months. She snored really bad and was sick often. Her tonsils and adenoids were HUGE. I disagree with the person who said its painless!! Adenoids are easy but tonsils are not.. I would do it again in a heartbeat though! She was a much different child after surgery, she slept much better and was alot less sickly!

Recovery was about 8 days for her. If you do the surgery just be sure to use the pain medication as prescribed.. DO NOT skip a dose because he will feel it.

Good luck!

Hey H. I agree, sooner then later...our little girl had it done when she was 4 and her recovery time was quick and almost painless. She doesn't even remember it now. Good Luck!

Hi! My DS had his tonsils out this past summer right before he turned 5 and had no problems. BFF's daughter had hers out last month and being only 2 1/2 it was a struggle.

If he's not showing the sleep apnea signs yet, then I would wait a little while (6 mo to a year). There was a huge difference in my son's recovery vs BFF's DD's recovery and I think it was because at almost 5 I could explain to him that if he didn't drink or take his meds he would have to go back to the doc.

DS was off pain meds by the 3rd day and BFF's DD was on them for 10. She wasn't going to be talked into, bribed, forced, or coaxed into doing anything, including drinking.

I do agree that you should get it done before he gets too old but I would try to hold out for a little longer. In fact, most ENTs will not remove tonsills until age 3 unless the child is continually sick.

Good Luck!

Do it sooner rather than later. I've heard that it's even worse when they are adults. A friend had it done when she was 30, and she said her c-sections didn't hurt that bad.
