My daughter had hers out last spring and they did give it to us. HOWEVER it made her really groggy and sick. We only gave her one dose, then used regular tylenol. It will get much better over the next day or so. Hang in there : )
Hello moms :). My son is 2 1/2 and had his tonsils and adenoids removed on Tuesday Mar. 8th. He is in alot of pain still. His dr. said that they do not give tylenol with codiene to kids anymore because studies in Europe show that it "doesn't work for kids". I'm just wondering if there are any moms with kids out there that have had their tonsils removed and did get codiene? Did it work well? I'm just wondering if I should just call the office back and see if they can give him something stronger..... he's still suffering quite a bit and it breaks my heart :(. But if it doesn't work why bother...?? Thanks so much!!

Uh, my son had his T and A ove the summer and yes, they gave him something for pain. It was stronger than tylenol with codeine. I wish I could remember what it is called. My son was in agony for 2 weeks even while taking the medication. Call and demand they take you and your son's pain seriously!
I would not accept that they cannot give him pain medication. Yes, he is a baby but honestly the poor child is in severe pain. I had my tonsils out when I was 5 and my sister had hers out a few years ago as an adult. No walk in the park...she was in pain for at least 2 weeks! Call the doctor and insist they prescribe something for the pain. They put your baby under anesthesia, I hardly believe pain medication is more harmful/serious than that.
.
My son had his out yesterday and he has hydrocodone. Tylenol with coedine. My son is 6 and you would never know he had surgery yesterday. I am still a little baffled, he was up and playing an hour after we got home. Be sure he is drinking lots of water and popsicles. Good Luck!
I had my tonsils out at age 16. It was TERRIBLE !!! They gave me a liquid type of percoset? And also tylenol with codiene. The percoset made me throw up but the tylenol with codiene really helped with the pain. I had terrible strep throat about 7 time per year or more for as long as I can remember. My doctor said I would grow out of it. My mom took me to a specialist and finally they took out my tonsils. Honestly I would rather go through child birth then that pain..... poor kid.. I would get another opinion or just tell your dr. you don't think the tylenol alone is doing enough... :(
Yes, my son was given Tylenol with codeine when he had his tonsils and adenoids removed at 24 months old. I believe it worked for him, but he sure did not enjoy swallowing it! I would definately ask your doctor for some kind of pain medication for your son if he is still in a lot of pain.
Good luck! I know the week after surgery is really hard on everyone!! :)
My twin daughters (4.5 yrs old) had their tonsils and adenoids removed right after Christmas, and they DID get the codeine. In fact, we wouldn't have made it through without. Ask your doctor for something stronger.
I am so sorry to hear that you are going throught this. It is so hard to watch our kids be in pain. My son had his t & a removed last December and it ws hell for the whole first week. Each day will get a little better, so hang in there. It is still a pretty fresh wound. We were given a pain med, but I can't remember what it was. (Sorry, not too helpful). It was pretty critical though. I hope you doc will cooperate. I would have the on-call doctor paged over the weekend. I bet they will call in a prescription to get you off their back. Hang in there!!!
My daughter had hers out just before she turned 3. She wouldn't take the codiene, so I just alternated Tylenol and Ibuprofen every 3 hours. I agree, ice packs on the throat really helped. (we used frozen corn packs.) lol
The first week is tough, but you are almost there. Hang in there!
Both my daughters had their tonsils out-my older one was 3 and the surgeon would not give us anything stronger than tylenol. I called multiple times to try and get something more, and no one would budge. My younger one just had hers out at 2 years of age and this time I chose a surgeon who would give us tylenol with codeine, but I don't know that it really made much of a difference. It tasted terrible to her, and didn't seem to do much more than regular tylenol. The first 8-10 days were terrible, but we all survived. I definately feel your pain and hope things are getting better!
When I had my tonsils out as an adult. I only could take Tylenol Liquid without codiene because I am allergic. What helped me was to ice my throat for the first few days instead of the just the couple of hours they recommend. Also, you have to keep the throat moist . Lots of water. That is the key. Good luck :)
My daughter had Roxicet. We only had to give it to her the day after and she was up and running. I would ask your doctor again or get a second opinion. She had one surgery for the adnoids and one for the tonsils and acted the same on both occassions.
Didnt read the other answers but I have two children who had them taken out at the same time and my doctor did give them the tylenol with codiene. It was over ten years ago but I dont think children should be suffering. Id call your doctor again :)
My son was older and he got tylenol with codine, they first gave him morephine and found out the hard way that he was allergic to it!! My son had a super simple and basic bladder surgery and he was put on the tylenol with codine, I couldn't believe it because it was so simple and I already told the urologist that my son has an extremely high pain tolerance, and that was less than 6 months ago. So don't ask for it, demand for it! I've learned through the years (my son has very complicated and complex special needs) I know what works, what doesn't work and I know my son the best.
My son is having major surgery on Wednesday (and yes I am terrified of it, because it involves the spinal cord) and you better believe it I will be asking the surgeon (actually telling him) what meds he is going to be on and everything like that.
Good Luck!!
