Most kids feel fine in a few days (you should be past the worst of it).
Some will take a few more days, but the Dr's recommend you stay home for a week, just so there's no jumping/running around while things heal up.
With our son, he was just 4 when we had his out.
His were not infected but they swelled up so large they had become an obstruction.
His sleeping improved immediately.
He was so quiet, and I was so use to him snoring up a storm every night that I kept checking to make sure he really was breathing all right.
He loved eating jello, pudding, and ice cream the first few days and I kept him eating soft foods (scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, oatmeal, soup, etc) that whole first week.
