Tongue Cleaning for 2Yr Old Toddler

Lately I've been having the hardest time trying to get my sons tongue clean. We use an electric tooth brush and we brush his teeth/tongue twice a day at home (and they brush at daycare after lunch with a regular tooth brush too) He has had great dental health, but the past week or so hes developed a yellowish/brownish build up toward the back of his tongue. I'm sure it has been exaggerated by the holiday abundance of chocolate bunnies and hersey kisses and lollypops, he doesn't get a lot of candy but we've got a large family (split) and since this weekend he has had 4 seperate easter hunts/parties which you can imagine every relative enjoys giving a little cutie a special treat,.. (Agh!!) Also, part of me thinks he's getting to that age where it may not be much of a stretch to think he could be hiding a stash of hershy kisses somewhere, he german, loves the chocolate like his Oma! Anyways, I know I'm probably going to get a lot of responses on thrush, but I really don't think that is what it is. It doesn't hurt him, he doesnt have bad breath, or any of the symptoms that go along with it. Also he's not really into sticking things other than food in his mouth. We've been trying to get the electric tooth brush to the back of his mouth but its really hard to do without making him gag,.. My husband is going to pick up a tongue brush tonight to see if that will help, I figure its smaller and maybe we can really get to it without making him gag. I've made him a dentist appointment too but they're really busy and can't take him for a couple weeks. Any other advice as to what else we can try? I'm finding myself worrying about it more than I should!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks, I probably am too worried. I also want to add that he does not get candy often, it is offered as a reward like when he sits on the potty, so it is not a regular part of his dayly diet. I did call the dentist all they said was to watch it and if it doesn't go away in a couple days to see his medical doctor. We tried the tongue scrapper and he didn't really get the concept of it. Yesterday he said "owwie" and pointed to his mouth, but the two times he did it it was after he coughed. I googled "Yellow tongue" in the medical look ups like someone suggested and found a remedy of 1 part peroxide to 5 parts water, that was harmless and supposively effective in helping this go away. My son let me brush his tongue with it without much of a fuss but I haven't had a chance to get a good look at his tongue to see if it did anything. I'll update this once I find out, might be helpful to someone in the future...

A. - i could be totally wrong, but I am pretty sure our bodies have good bacteria and bad bacteria. If he does not have bad breath and you are brushing his teeth than I would not be worried about it. I also know that my dentist recommends NOT using the tongue cleaner since it gets rid of "stuff" that we need in our mouths.
I have never brushed my children's tongues and if I tried to scrape them than he would gag I am sure.
I am sure he is fine! L.

Well you might want to give him yorgurt with live cultures or asodaphlis milk (i am sure this is not the correct spelling) if it is thru the live cultures help control the yeast and make it better and if he has had any antibiotics or chocolet that is not a usual for him to have this could be it yeast infections also complacate rash in the area of potty and with boys that are not cecumsized it is hard to tell but fromthe bad order and the itching so look for that if it is not thru the yorgurt will not harm him nor will the milk so it is safe unless he is lactose intolerant. so good luck! change of diet also cause yeast levels to change so? hope this helps

It sounds like he may have indulged in a lot of candy. I would make sure he is drinking plenty of water.

It sounds like you may be a little too worried about this! Most two year olds don't brush their teeth twice a day willingly, so you're very lucky he already has a concept of oral cleanliness!

Call the dentist and ask if they have any words of wisdom (aside from "don't let him have too much candy"!).

I can't even remember the last time I looked into my 2 year old's mouth!! She's healthy and doesn't have bad breath.

I also think the discoloration is caused by the candy. If so the stain should go away quickly.

I cannot get to the back of my tongue no matter how small the brush or scraper is. Neither can my granddaugter. We both gag and she actually vomits.

You could try rinsing his mouth with a hydrogen peroxide/water solution. I use about half and half. It fizzes and may wash away stuff on the back of the tongue. Have him swish it around for a minute or so if possible.

Have you looked up brown or discolored tongue on one of the health nets?

Apples are natural mouth/teeth cleaners - try cutting candy out and giving him more water to drink and fruit and vegetables like apples and maybe carrots or cucumbers and other high fiber foods. Check it in a few days and I bet it'll be better.

I wouldn't do too much tongue brushing or scraping, that could create owies on his tongue I would imagine. I know when I use a tongue scraper I'm very careful and don't overdo or it can draw a little blood.
