How on earth do you teach a boy to wipe his bottom correctly after a bowel movement? My oldest is starting school on Monday and cannot wipe his bottom well at all. What do I do? I have tried hand over hand and moist wipes. He wants to do it and use only toilet paper. Help.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for all the advice. The exact issue, perhaps I was not clear, is that he doesn't wipe anything off, he never gets up there far enough. I like the bath tub advice and will try that tonight during his bath. I hope that this helps others.

I am having the same problem with my dd. I try to tell her to wipe away from her private areas and to lean over so that she can reach from behind but it is still difficult for both of us. I will be looking at this post also for advice. I don't think they let them have wet wipes at school. That is what we use at home. D.

i taught ds to "wipe three times" -- i figure repetition will fix whatever aiming issues he might have. we use the moist wipes, and he'll wipe with 3 different ones, then flush and wash his hands. it seems to work most of the time.

My 6yo son will be starting 1st grade Monday and he is just now getting to where he can wipe effectively. I saw him in the bathroom a few times trying to reach behind. He looked like he was about to fall off of the toilet, it was so awkard. So, we practiced in the bathtub during his bath. I would have him sit on his knees with them spread apart a little. Then he would reach behind until he felt his "booty hole". I explained that is where the poop came out and he had to reach that far to clean his bottom.

He has gotten better, more flexible, with age and practice.

For a while he reached from the front. Of course, with a boy there is not so much of the issue of getting the poop in the vaginal area like there is on girls. So, I let him do it that way for a while.

He has since gone back to wiping from behind. He still occasionally comes home with stripes on his underwear or dried poop on his bottom, but it is getting further in between occurances. I think it is something they just have to practice and practice at.

First, like someone else said tell hime to make sure to look at the paper until it is clean. I posted this before and some people might think it is mean but I made my son wash his underwear out by hand and believe me things got much better after that one time.

Tell him to look at it and keep wiping till all the poop is gone. Check on him and be consistant and make sure he is doing it right he is old enough to do this so make him. My neighbor lady is going threw the same thing with her daughter but she just would wipe for her because it was easier for her. Tisk now her daughter starts school monday and it dosent sound like she will be the only one with an itchy butt. Good luck

I don't know what "hand over hand" is but in our house, we were taught to use toilet paper to wipe our rears when we have a bowel movement. Sounds like your son is doing just fine. If he's not getting all of the residue with the first wipe, tell him that "it's always nice to wipe twice".

My daughter would do the same. She is better at it now but I have to stand there and evaluate her to make sure and do it right. If she did wipe I tell her to sit back then she is not finished. She got the point that I she had to wipe and good then wash her hands. It is not easy depending on the child. Kind of funny though but it is working for me. There might be others going to the same problem. I will continue to read to see what else anyone else comes up with. Good luck.

This might sound a little odd but my nephew had no idea what he was aiming for since the area in question is out of sight. We had him watch us with his little brother during a diaper change so he could see what he was working with and it really helped him figure out what would work. Best of luck!

I'm trying to do what another mom did on another forum. She said her new rule is that Mommy wouldn't wipe his butt until her son had twice. Then check and finish if he needed it.

Someone else asked about this ... I think what J. S meant by "hand over hand" is she uses her hand over her son's hand to show him how to do it.

Anyway, I'll check up later to see what other moms said too. Good luck everyone!

I'm not sure if this is a teachable skill --- LOL!! I have 3 boys in my house (and one of them is grown, if you know what I mean) and I still see skid marks!! LOL!!

GOOD LUCK!
