My Daughter is 27mths and very active. Her big toe nail looks as if it is falling off but there hasn't been anything (boo boo) to make it do so? I am very puzzled and Don't know what to do? Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for all the help. I went to the Dr and he is not sure what is going on also. So it is now the wait and see game.

have you painted her toe nails? If so that could be the reason. My little one lost a nail because of nail polish, the nail does not breath enough if it is painted

Her shoes are probably too small. If there's pressure on the edge of her nail pushing it back, it will cause the nail to lift from the end and peel off backwards. Just make sure she has plenty of room in the end of her shoes, and it will grow back. If it's not all the way off, it will fall off. There's no way to prevent it, if it already looks like it has seperated. It most likely doesn't hurt her, so take comfort.

Take her to the doc. My husband had an incident with his toe nail and damaged the nail bed. He ignored it and he recently had to have surgery because when it grew back it grew into his toe. So if you can work it into her routine check up visit for her doc, great, if not, a co-pay now is better then surgery later.
Good luck

Hi K....I'm a licensed managing nail technician and am well versed in diseases/conditions of the nails. Is the nail ridged? Discolored? Is the skin around the nail tender, discolored and/or the nail bed itself? There are so many possibilities! She may have injured the nail's "root" which more than likely didnt cause any pain. When the "root" is injured it can cause the entire nail to shed but never fear, a new nail will grow in its place. If you don't think it's important enough to check with the pediatrician (which i agree it isnt) then you should just play the watch and wait game. Good luck!

You should probably take her to the doc, maybe its an ingrown toenail or something.

I WOULD TAKE HER TO YOUR DOCTOR BECAUSE IT COULD BE SOME KIND OF TOE FONGUS THATS CAUSES THE NAIL TO FALL OFF. HOPE THIS HELPS.

OUCH, I WOULD KEEP IT CLIPPED DOWN SO IT DOESN'T GET CAUGHT ON ANYTHING. IT MAY HAVE HAPPENED SEVERAL MONTHS AGO, IT TAKES A WHILE FOR A NAIL TO FALL OFF, BUT IT SHOULD BE DISCOLORED OR SOMETHING TOO. CALL HER DOCTOR AND ASK IF YOU SHOULD SOAK IT OR WHAT CAN BE DONE. GOOD LUCK AND GIVE HER A KISS FOR ME.
