My son will be three in September and about 2 months ago he started waking up at 5:15 am. He has his regular nap, and we started putting him to bed a half hour early since he keeps waking up that early. He used to wake up around 8! I know he is still tired, and he is so grumpy when he gets up. I can tell throughout the day he is over tired! Any advice? I need more sleep!

What can I do next?

How long is his nap usually? Maybe try shortening the nap? A lil boy I nannied did the same thing about this age and we had to suffer thru grumpy toddler for about a week of shorter naps but then he slept thru the night again. Which led to the end of grumpy toddler. It was tough but in the end we were able to adjust his sleep habits and it was worth it. Good luck, I know how hard it is to deal with a grumpy toddler!! : )

My daughter will be 3 in October and she is going through the same thing. She takes a two hour nap at school, and she get up between 2 & 4 every night saying she can't sleep. She doesn't go to bed until after nine o'clock. Maybe it's time for both of us to shorten nap time.

Hi Meagan, considering his bed time and him waking up at 5:15 maybe that is a full night for him. Kds go through different sleep habits and patterns, before they start school. Lay one of his blankets on the living room rug, with one of his favorite stuff animals, and maybe he will see that and lay him self down there and go back to sleep. Maybe you can put a cup of milk on the bottom of the frige that he can get himself, my first child at that age would get up before me, he had his own sruff in the frige for morning, and he had a table and chairs in the living room, he would get his stuff turn on the TV and sit at his table and he did really good with that. My son does this occasionally and we found something that finally worked for us. Our son's crib has a trundle underneath so my husband or I will go in and lay down in his room at 5 something am. We don't acknowledge him, just lay down and tell him to lay down. If he complains we softly shush him. We don't even have to do that anymore. Those mornings one of us have to go in he just lays down automatically and goes back to sleep for another couple of hours or more.
