My daughter is 22 mo old and has been sick since about Christmas eve. She first came down with some sort of stomach bug which I had as well. She threw up a couple times and was very irritable. Then yesterday, she didn't take a nap all day. Late in the afternoon I noticed her hands and feet were swollen. It looked like she had bites and was having an allergic reaction. This went away after about 45 min. She didn't sleep well at all last night. She woke up about every two hours. At 2 in the morning she had a fever of 102. This always scares me bc she has had febrile seizures in the past. The fever went away but came back today along with the swollen hands and feet. Her lips were also swollen this time. I thought they looked blue, but not sure. Once again this went away in about an hour. She seems uncomfortable during the swelling. Now it seems like she has a cold. Very strange!! Anyone else experienced this? Does this sound like an allergy?? She didn't eat anything different that I can think of. Thanks!!

So What Happened?

Just wanted to say I took my daughter to the Dr. and everything seems to be fine. As I thought, he prescribed an allergy medicine. I gave her Benadryl for a couple days and it seemed to reduce the rash but it made her act funny. He told me to try children's Zyrtec (which is otc now) for 10-14 days. He said the rash was not from her environment but rather from the sickness she has had. Thanks for all the responses and I hope this helps someone!!

I don't have experience with this but maybe "hand, foot, and mouth disease"? I would not wait any longer and would get her to the doc asap.

I'm not sure what this could be, but please, if you haven't already, take your little girl to the doctor! I definitely don't promote being alarmist about every little thing and I applaud you for not freaking out, but this sounds pretty complex--she needs a professional evaluation. I wish you good luck and good health!

Please, please, please take the baby to the hospital. This can be Kawasawki's disease which starts with a viral infection and ends with rashes...usually on the hands and feet. This requires an IMMEDIATE response, it can damage the heart fairly quickly (as in within the week). I'm in nursing and have seen some real tragedies from lack of knowledge. BUT, it could also be something benign...either way, get her to the hospital, mention you are concerned about Kawasaki's.

Info from a medical site about symptoms:

The symptoms of Kawasaki disease include...

fever
rash
swollen hands and feet
irritation and redness of the whites of the eyes
swollen lymph glands in the neck
irritation and inflammation of the mouth, lips and throat

Please go...

Leah,
I hope you have taken her to the doctor by now. I wouldn't have waited, in light of the symptoms you described. Please let us know how your little one is doing and what was/is going on with her.
Sharing might alert other moms if they see the same symptoms in their babies.

All of those symptoms can be signs of Strep Throat. I would take her to the pediatrician today if possible. If it is not possible I would consider an urgent care because untreated strep can turn into worse things. I have been through strep several times with my kids and they never complain of a sore throat first.

Leah,

Hopefully you have some Benadryl on hand. A nurse once told me that there are so many reasons that little ones have rashes. The fever, swelling, and history of seizures suggests that you should seek professional medical advice very soon.

I hope your little girl is okay.

I agree your daughter needs to be seen by a doctor right away. Also, did you get a live christmas tree? All kinds of allergins and bugs can come into the house on christmas trees. We always wash ours before bringing it in the house and you would be surprised to see what comes off in the process!

Is she sleeping on a feather pillow or does she have a down comforter that she may have received for Christmas? It seems like the swelling and rash occur when she's sleeping. I know my aunt can't sleep on a feather pillow, she is allergic to the feather down and it causes her to break out in a rash and swell. She also sleeps in a comatos state until she is removed from the pillow. After about an hour or so the symptoms are gone. Investigate what she got between Christmas Day and now that could be causing this. Sounds like an allergic reaction although I think the stomach bug is a separate ailment on it's own. Good luck!

Take her to the Dr. now. It could be a reaction to something she is exposed to but you need to have a Dr. determine this before it escalates in case it is not. Any kind of facial swelling can be an indicator of internal swelling that can be dangerous. Prayers. Let us know.

Please take her to a Dr. as soon as possible. These symptoms sound identical to my infant son's when he was diagnosed with Kawasaki's Disease. This is not anything to play with. Just take her as soon as you can for your peace of mind and for her safety.

Email me @ ____@____.com if you want to know more about this. I'd be more than happy to talk with you.

I am no professional, so I am going to say take her to the doctor. This does not sound normal, especially the swelling and then just going away. My children have all had some kind of reaction to something, but it usually lasts for quite awhile, not for just a short period, go away and then come back.

I am not sure if you have done this already but you need to take your child to the doctor immediately. I am not familiar with this however, I do know you should not take allergic reactions lightly, even if they go away.
