Toddler with Smelly Teething Drool

How odd that it is sweet smelling. That is often a tell tale sign of blood sugar levels in an adult. When I was training to do EMT work that was something I remember from the class.

For instance one might come upon a person who is unconscious and they have on a diabetic warning bracelet.

If their breath smells sweet/fruity (Hypoglycemia) we did one thing and if it smelled like acetone/fingernail polish (Hyperglycemia) remover we did something else. One was to rub sugar, like pop or OJ in their mouth, not enough to choke them but that some sugar could be absorbed through the mucus membranes.

Of course there would be other symptoms of either illness in this case, just stating that those are the only times I know of that saliva smell tells some something important.

I would ask the doc for sure about his one. He may want to rule out juvenile diabetes.

My daughter sucks her thumb and I've noticed that her thumb will also have a sweet smell... I'll be curious to see others' answers.

It's probably not the saliva but the clothing, that's smelling. Maybe wash her clothes with some vinegar.

Our son is also 14 months and he drools like mad constantly. All of his clothes at the collar/neck and all of his teething bibs have a moldy smell but not a sweet smell. I would run it by your doctor/pediatrician. One quick call for their input. For what it is worth I can't get the smell out of the fabric despite every possible method (bleach, hot water, vinegar, sun, etc). I hope you have better luck in the laundry department than I. Also I notice the smell gets worse the longer he has his clothes on. At first the clothes smell fine and then within a short period the odor crops up and gets worse. Good luck.
