Toddler Who WILL NOT Keep Clothes Ar a Diaper On!! Pees in Potty, Won't Poop....

My 20 month old little girl absolutely, vehemently refuses to keep clothes or her diaper on for more than a couple minutes! I have recently started potty training her (as she had shown quite an interest), and she always goes pee in the potty a couple times a day, but will poop on the floor (ewww I know).

At nap times and when I get her up in the morning, she is always naked and has either pooped or at least peed in her crib (a few times), the laundry is getting out of control! I have tried keeping her in onesies with pants, body suits, sleepers (with and without snaps), and even a bathing suit to have her keep her diaper on....but to no avail!!
I am at a loss as to what to do....other than to turn her crib into her toddler bed and put a potty up there and hope for the best? She goes to bed around 7pm and sleeps through the night until I get her up at about 7 the next morning!
Please help!! I am at my wits end and am thinking about taking stock out for Tide and Gain!! lol

What can I do next?

I had this problem with my son for a while but only at night so it was a little easier to deal with. I put him in footless blanket sleepers (cut the feet out when needed) and put them on him backwards because it was impossible for him to unzip. I felt so mean but it broke the habit and saved lots of laundry.

Good Luck,

My 2 year old is the same way, but she was only doing it at her dad's/grandmothers. He uses the duct tape on the diaper and says it works. I give her a specified amount of "Naked Time" each day, but the rule is she has to keep on her diaper. It works, she never strips at my house. Her dad has now instituted Naked Time and has found that she doesn't strip any more.

Duck Tape her diaper. I know it sounds extreme but just for a little while. she is testing her independence. & oh most kids when they first potty train either poop OR pee in the potty...not both. You can also try a reward system...mm's... good luck.

Just wanted to offer a possible alternative...you may want to check out websites & books discussing Elimination Communication. One recommendation is the book "Diaper-Free Baby". I don't practice EC, but I have friends who do & their 18 month daughter is diaper-free with (almost) no accidents (even at night). I guess my thought is to try to follow her impulse, but decrease the mess. Good luck!

My daughter went through a similar, although blessedly brief, phase. What worked for us was having a trusted relative talk with her. Her auntie, whom she reveres, sat with her and kindly but firmly told her that she should not be taking off her diaper. After that I had a few follow up conversations with her, reminding her what her auntie had said. Sometimes it just helps hearing it from someone other than mom. Best of luck coping with this most trying development!

S.,

I would just put her in cotton underwear training pants during the day. Yes, it might make a mess but maybe if you tell her that they are big girl pants she might keep them on. Also a dress may help - one that has to go over her head.

As for the night - have you tried putting her diaper on backwards? I've heard that sometimes helps. And maybe check on her earlier in the morning -trying to get to her before she wakes up and takes off her clothes and diaper and makes a mess. Try getting up at 6:30am and see if she is already awake and playing if not, listen for her and at the first sign of noise go in and get her up and try her on the toilet.

Good luck,

Hi S.,

My solution to this with my boys was overalls. They were able to pull off their elastic waist pants but overall hooks were a challenge they didn't conquer during this time.

Good luck,

I also have a red headed spit fire who never wants to wear her clothes! She is 2 1/2 so she is potty trained (mostly) and in a bed. We put her in a toddler bed around 18 months and it backfired. She wasn't quite ready to potty train so we put her back in her crib after a few months. I find with my daughter, the less I battle her on things the more I win out. She is the type who likes to fight. Maybe try some naked time during the day. Keep it to one room, potty near by. She has to go potty first before naked time begins. Just some suggestions. I don't agree with Gloria that it is "that simple" Nothing is ever that simple. Especially with a redhead! Good luck.

UPDATE: Kudos with Amy for coming back at me. I have written her a personal note to let her know that I AM A SINGLE MOTHER with a son who is 18 now, so I KNOW it is hard. I wrote to Amy to explain why I wrote WHAT I wrote....
You say: "At nap times and when I get her up in the morning, she is always naked and has either pooped or at least peed in her crib" Well, then, it is simple. Set an alarm for youself or something and YOU go in and wake her up before she wakes herself up, and guess what? No more coming in to find her naked! and then YOU can take her to the potty to go pee or poop. AND you say she will not keep clothes or diaper on. Well, you must stop doing anything but KEEPING YOUR EYE ON YOUR DAUGHTER. Let things go for a few days in the hosue. It seems to me that you are a stay-at-home Mom, so don't turn your back on her, then she can't undress herself. If you are watching her, as soon as you see her start to attempt to undress, you stop her. It really is that simple. She will continue to undress if you don't watch her or if she wakes herself up, so it's your choice, I guess, if you want her to stop. OR, try what someone else said: DUCT TAPE.

I've heard that if you put a sleeper on backwards they can't get out of it! Sorry, I don't have any experience as my daughter hasn't reached this stage yet. I just wanted to lend support as it seems Gloria is very negative and judgemental. Being a single mom is tough, I know personally and I've only got one. I can't imagine how you can do it with three! We know that it is impossible to stop everything that you are doing and only watch your child for the entire day. Those words of advice sound like they are coming from someone who either doesn't have kids or pays someone else to watch her children. I just wanted you to know that I've read about this stage and heard about it from other parents and you are not alone...it will pass and don't let anyone make you feel bad about it at all.

Put duct tape on her diaper. I've never had a problem with that, but I've heard from other moms that it works wonders.
