My 2 yr old is not wanting to sleep in his bed for the past couple of weeks since we had a bad storm. We try just standing next to his bedroom door, sitting next to his bed, and even right outside his bedroom door. He will usually fall asleep within 15-30 minutes. Within a few hours he is up and trying to get in our bed. I'll take him back to his bed and he will fall asleep but within another hour or two he is up again. This happens at least a 3-6 times a night. He is starting to skip his nap but still sleeps a total of at least 11-12 hours. My hubby mentioned about moving his bed into his sisters(4 yr old) bedroom. I don't know or feel as if that is a good idea. She is usually a good sleeper and I would hate for him to be waking her up at night but then again i wonder if he would sleep better being near her. Any suggestions?
He's been in a twin size bed for over a year now.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I caved in yesterday and moved his bed into his sisters bedroom. He only woke up twice last night which was a lot better. Hopefully this will work out and if not his bed will be going into his own room within a week.

I am beginning to think moving him in with his sister was a mistake. The first night he did pretty good but last night was terrible. He kept trying to sneak into my bed. He also woke his sis a bunch of times from him crying. :S I'm considering putting him back in his own room just so his sis doesn't loose sleep, especially with her starting school next month.

No, don't move him into his sister's room. Though her presence will be a comfort to him, he does not need to learn that he has to have someone in their to sleep with him to go to sleep.
Just keep doing what you are doing. When he gets out of the bed, hold his hand and take him back to his room. No chit chat, just tell him it is time for sleep and you love him. Kiss him, cover him up, and leave.
You should also do that when he is going to sleep at night. Do not allow him to fall asleep in your presence. This will be a hard thing to undo later in life.

Well I just read your post and saw you caved in and put his bed in his sister's room. I am seriously thinking this was a terrible mistake. One that will take a long time to undo.

It must be the age, we are going through the same thing. Try a lovey or something he can attach to. Try a night light. The next night you know there is a storm, maybe "camp" out in the living room together, to help him get over his fear? Show him that storms are okay.. (hopefully you have no tornadoes, that is scarry). Maybe a new protector (I think we are going to go to buid a bear) and tell him that he will keep him safe from storms.

We are also thinking that our little guy is going through growing pains and that is waking him up and he is crying out in pain and fear.

You are doing the right thing, I feel for you as we are up ever few hrs as well (he will be two Aug 9th.)

Good luck.

He will probably get over it if you are consistently putting him back in his bed. I know it's exhausting, but try to do it for one more week.

I actually am planning to put our girls in the same room (even though we have more than enough bedrooms) so they can experience sharing their space for a few years. If you were wanting to do that anyway, then I think it's fine to move him in there. If not, though, moving him back out after a couple of months may make it worse.

How long as he been sleeping in his big boy bed? About a week or two after moving my daughter she started getting up at night just b/c she could. It was rough. If he's been in his bed a long time, it's probably something else, maybe the storm as you mentioned. I would talk to him about it...ask him why he's coming into your room, why he doesn't want to stay in his room, etc. I agree that moving him in with sister might make it worse for her! I suppose you could try it on a sleeping bag or something for a few nights and see if that works before making a big move.
