Toddler Screaming and Sobbing Several Times at Night - HELP

My 23 month old has been yelling out and uncontrollably sobbing several times (almost every 2 hours) the last few nights. When we go in he doesn't want to be touched but wants us to stay nearby. He was never a quiet sleeper - often calling out once during the night - but he was able to self sooth and fall back asleep. He is now yelling so loudly it is hard not to jump out of bed and run to him.

I don't know if it is relevant but he had his tonsils/adenoids out 2 weeks ago and we were giving him medication every 4 hours when he cried out in pain. He is doing fine now and has not needed the pain medication. When he does sleep his breathing is much smoother then what it was before the surgery.

To add to the fun I am 36 weeks pregnant and barely able to get a good nights sleep on a quiet night. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

My son, for a different reason, woke like this every night also. He is 9 now. Looking back I wish I would have placed a mattress, next to him and stayed there until this wasn't an issue anymore. I feel that what I did do, prolonged the whole thing. In our case it was anxiety and the only way to give him "peace" would have been to feel secure. Peace knowing you're near, rubbing his back, holding his hand etc. I think if you did these things, this would disappear within 2 weeks. Good luck and congratulations on your new baby.

Hi - I agree that it could be night terrors and or dreams because they do start around 2 yo. If you don't get a good answer from your pediatrician and you ruled out infection etc, you might want to try a chiropractic healer or a naturopath. Surgery is a major trauma and I know many children who have had night terrors afterwords.

I'd call the pediatrician, just to make sure that there isn't an 'after surgery' infection.

Otherwise, it could just be a bad dream or some night terrors. Your son is of the age when they usually start, and boys seem to have them more than girls. With the terrors tho, they usually scream out but are still asleep. So this may not be the cause.
