Toddler Potty Issues

My daughter will be 3 in September. I need to figure out how to get her to go poop in the potty. She only wears panties during the day and hasn't had an accident in a long time. However, at night, I still put her in a pull-up because she goes poop in the middle of the night. I think the problem is that she's never been "regular" and it hurts when she goes because it's always hard. So she associates the potty with it hurting. I have put her on Miralax at the advice of her doctor to try to get her more regular but it doesn't seem to be working. Oh she's going poop but still in the middle of the night. I have tried to put her on the potty and let her watch tv or read to her but she wants nothing to do with it. She won't stay long enough to do anything and she just cries because she doesn't want to do it. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get her to go in the potty. Maybe something I haven't thought of. Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

Maybe try softening up her diet a little to help her a little w/apple juice, raisins, grapes, prunes, apple sauce, something that is going to help her a little w/the bm's so they aren't so hard to pass thru. If the miralax isn't working then maybe try talking to her ped about something else if the foods/drinks above don't help. Best of luck to you.

My son was pretty much the same. He would pee in the toilet all day but he would never stick around to potty in the toilet. His sitter just got him to relax and try to go and he did it. I would suggest that you try to give her lots of water. Apple juice always worked for my kids also. Fiber bars are also good. My son loves them. Maybe you can give her a water bottle when she sits on the potty.

My son did this for a year, he said b/c it hurt. And b/c of the constipation he wasn't regular. So, I put him back on baby food. Some people may not agree with that but it worked for my child. It softened him up, he got his nutrition, and it made him regular and reintroduced him to how going poop in the potty didn't have to hurt. I supplemented with solid fruits and veggies. Once he got regular and wasn't scared to go poop anymore, I slowly introduced solids like meat and carbs back into his diet.

To try to get her to poop earlier during the day try increasing her fiber in the morning. Fiber One bars are excellent and taste good, they work for my little guy with as little as half a bar, and oatmeal, especially with chopped apples and raisins in it, along with whole wheat toast are good as well. Make sure to give her water to drink with it as well as offering her water all day long. Water works with the Miralax, which draws water to her stool to soften it so she can go, which it sounds like she is, but because of the fear she's holding it until it happens involuntarily. Don't give her bananas or cheese which can bind, and make sure to offer her fruits like oranges, watermelon, prunes and plums, and veggies (except corn) at meals and as snacks rather than cookies, crackers or chips (not saying you do ; )

Have you tried sitting on the toilet while you have her sit on the potty? Tell her that you want some company, don't tell her you want her to try, and talk to her about her day or something to take her mind off performing. Let her see you go, so she knows it's normal and natural.

Also, I just read this idea a few days ago, what about a small new toy you can place where she can see it from her potty, that she can earn after 5 or so poops int her potty?

And try a warm bath. My nephew would get constipated sometimes when he was younger, and one day my BIL put him in a long, warm bath and he pooped, unbeknownst, in the tub. They realized it relaxed him so after that whenever he would have a problem they'd put him in a warm bath and take him out and sit him on the potty when they saw him getting ready to go.

Hopefully you can get her system regular in the day so she'll go on the potty and see it's not so bad and continue.

Have you tried increasing the amount of Miralax that you give her? Give it perhaps twice a day. I agree with increasing the amount of fiber and water in her diet. I also recommend that you not give her dairy products. They tend to be constipating. My grandson had very hard and painful bowel movements and we switched him to rice milk.
