Toddler Girl's Hair in Eyes

DD is 17 months old, and her hair gets into her eyes. She doesn't sit still for any of it, and will often pull the 'hair pretties' out. Any suggestions other than giving her bangs? I have the little flip barettes that are silicone-coated, which stay in pretty well when she doesn't pull on them. Other attempts have been these bead-looking barettes and soft elastic headbands.

What can I do next?

We use little elastic rubber bands. You can get about a million of them for a buck at Wal-mart in the baby section. I put the poney on top of her head where it's hard for her to reach... but even when she does reach it is very difficult for her to pull these out esp if i wrap it around her hair 4X.

MY DD does it too. I refuse to cut her hair and gotten a lot of slack for it from EVERYONE but my DH and friends. I have made it clear to my family if ANYONE cuts it or even tries to get her to AGAIN, they wont see us for quite sometime. They have finally stopped bothering but we have the little elastics and just keep putting them back in. Slowly the hair will be trained. Also when she sleeps you can get this hair tape to put in and hold it out of her face. I used it when I was a preteen to train my hair also. I have even used a little jel and hairspray at times but prefer not to. If it makes her hair stay and her leave it I'll put a little in.
It just takes training the hair. And time!
Good Luck-I hate bangs so I get it.

I know the feeling we tried everything...but, bangs was the only solution... bring her to the salon, they tend to sit still better for someone else. and it looks adorable!

This is a very strange suggestions, but I figured I'd throw it out there.
I considered using hair product on my daughter's hair, but I really don't want to do that. Yesterday, she got some juice from her fruit lunch in her hair and then her hair was pushed out of her eyes quite nicely for quite a while. I bathe her every night because she is a complete mess after feeding herself so I'm considering using some kind of natural food 'juice' to help hold her hair.
She has the same exact issue as your daughter. I finally caved last week and trimmed her bangs. Her hair looks kind of mullet-ish now and the bangs already need another trim. I don't recommend cutting the bangs. It's not working well for us. Good luck!

We had the same problem with our daughter--it's much like that in-between stage you go through when growing out a short haircut. Other than patience and those Stay Put barrettes, the thing I can recommend is a little bit of product (gel, perhaps) to smooth the hair back or over to one side. There's a good organic line if you are concerned about that (Giovanni, I think?)that they sell in most health food stores. Good luck! L. M.

I had the same issues... I just kept putting them back in telling her (my Rachel almost 3 now) not to touch. She didn't listen most of the time... but eventually she forgot about them. She still does take them out time to time... but most of the time not.

she, like me has very curly hair and I don't want bangs for her... they are more of a pain. her bangs are almost to her chin and when she does not have a barret in her hair she is constantly pushing it aside... then I bring up the barret and most of the time she will let me put them in.

Just like everything eles... keep trying and tell them no when they take it out... then put it right back in!!

Good Luck!

Let it go wild until she gets to the age where she will keep barrets in, no worries! I cut bangs and regret it because it took forever to grow them back out. My daughter would never keep anything in her hair.

I have no advice to you...... But I wanted to say I have been thinking of posting the same type of question. My 2yr old has very fine hair, not very long either, she pulls everything out that I try to put in it.

The only one thing I have done that works for a short time, is in the morning I'll wet her hair down and comb it to the side..... It kinda helps to settle it down.
Best of Luck and I will keep reading this post! Thanks

I did a two tiny pigs on top of DD's head when she was that age. Her hair wasn't long enough for proper pig tails, but gathering up the stuff on top gave her the two most darling antennae, LOL, and kept it out of her eyes.

Hi K.,

What worked best with my DD (who is now 5), was to just be persistent in putting the clips back in, reminding her that I wanted to see her pretty face! Sooner or later she just gave up with pulling them out b/c I would just keep putting them back in! I also tried using a lot of those tiny rubber bands. She seemed to leave those alone more often than the pretties.

HTH,
M.

You might want to try the plastic rubberbands for ponytails - they cannot get them out themselves. Take them out carefully and slowly because hair can wrap around them and break - doesn't seem to hurt the tots though. Also, take a look at the wider cloth headbands sold at places like BabyGap or Gymboree even some of the headbands that have the cardboard shapers in them. When your daughter gets a few months older - mine is 20 months old now - she will remember your instructions to leave the barrettes in the hair and cooperate a bit more. All of the little ones pull out their little "pretties." She might even like to put headbands on her stuffed animals. Put the barrettes in your hair, too, when you're at home. She might like to do her hair just like her mama's.

Hi!

Have you tried the "no slippy hair clippy"? www.hairclippy.com

They are a bit expensive, but they are lined with velvet that helps them stay in.

Hi K.,

I guess that you have the other side of the coin. I also have a 17 month old girl, but she has nearly no hair at all. My husband continually asks her when she is going to grow some--as if she 1. understands, 2. can control it. :-)

When my oldest was just over 2, she started needing barrettes. I used the hair clips--look kind of like triangles--but not the normal size ones; the mini ones. I just used 3 one on side of her part and one on the other. She occasionally pulled them out, but not often. Mostly in the car, so I stopped letting her have them in the car. I used these for over a year and a half.

We did two tiny pigtails at that age, too. One or two little ones on top of her head with just that hair that falls in her face....pulled back sort of loose so it won't bother her. We called them "shrek ears" because the movie was out and it just sort of looked like that, but cute. She likes those soft elastics...sort of like terry cloth...they come in loads of colors and you can buy them anywhere, like Walmart or CVS.

Hi K..

You can get a non-slip barrette that actually stays in baby/toddler hair at www.babycalla.com. They are called Calla-Gator barretes (they open and close like an alligator's mouth) and also have a strip of velcro to keep the barrette fastened securely. They range in price from $2 to $4 and come in a variety of colors/prints.

I am also NOT a fan of bangs; and these helped keep my daughter bang-free. At almost 3 she now has realized it's annoying when her hair is in her face, and actually asks for the barretes.

Please feel free to email if you have any questions about Calla-Gator barrettes. Good Luck.

Hi Kristen,
My daughter isabelle is also 17 months and I tend to have the same problem with her. Anything I put in her hair she pulls right out..lol...I have finally just recently managed to trim her bangs, I found giving her a bite of something really yummy to eat while doing this helped. Good Luck :)

must keep this short but wanted to throw it out there.....get a soft headband- a stretch one. My daughter loves hers. Also my daughter wears hats / visers. Goodluck!
bangs aren't always the best choice to solve the problem. I have friends that are growing out bangs after having them......

i don't have girls - but I do have 8 nieces - try putting her hair in a braid, french braid, pig tails - even let HER pick out her own 'hair pretties' may help out & let her choose which one she wants to wear that day. Headbands (hard or soft). You don't have to give her bangs - good luck!

You can try wetting the bang area and add a tiny bit of mouse, and put in the "hair pretty". At least when she pulls it out the hair may stay in place a little.
